Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with The Baby-Sitters Club’s Anais Lee

For Anais Lee, there’s no better place on Earth than on a set. It’s where she’s at her happiest, working on projects like Blood Ties, Veep, The Following, The Blacklist, and The Sun Is Also a Star.

This summer, she stars in her biggest role yet in Netflix’s breakout hit The Baby-Sitters Club. Pop Culturalist caught up with Anais to learn more about her and her character in The Baby-Sitters Club.

Career

PC: How did you discover your passion for the arts?
Anais: I started super young at five years old. I learned I’ve always loved to act. Being on set is my happy place, and I feel happiest when I am filming.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Anais: My mom has had the biggest influence on my career because she is like my “momager.” I would not have the career that I have right now if it were not for her. She helps manage all of my auditions, communications, and encourages me to work hard. I feel like she is a superhero because she does so much for my sister and I. I am so grateful to have her.

PC: You’ve had quite a successful career at such a young age. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Anais: My most favorite moment from my career is obviously when I was filming The Baby-Sitters Club. But another fun moment that sticks out to me was when I was six years old and I went to the Cannes Film Festival. When my sister, Mirabelle, and I were five years old, we landed our very first movie, called Blood Ties. The movie went to the Cannes Film Festival, and we had the opportunity to fly to France for the festival! Even though I was really young, it was still such an amazing experience.

PC: Your twin sister is also an actress. How helpful is it to have her by your side as you navigate through this career?
Anais: I love having my sister, Mirabelle, with me throughout this journey. We always support each other and help each other on our auditions. It’s really cool that my sister is an actress because she is always my scene partner when preparing auditions and she is my best friend.

The Baby-Sitters Club

PC: Tell us about the new series, The Baby-Sitters Club, where you play Jessi Ramsey. What drew you to this project?
Anais: When I received the audition for The Baby-Sitters Club, I was so excited because I knew this was going to be an iconic show. I did my research on the character Jessi by reading the book series, and I became even more excited because I felt like the role was perfect for me! I was so happy to have an opportunity to act and dance at the same time, which was so awesome. I am so grateful to be a part of this amazing project, and I was able to meet some amazing people and make new best friends along the way.

PC: What should fans know about Jessi? How similar or different are you to her?
Anais: Jessi and I are a lot alike. I feel like I am very similar to Jessi, as we are both dancers and care about our friends. Jessi cares about others and always wants to help. But she also cares a lot about her passion, which is dance! Like me, Jessi is a determined and focused ballerina. She really has her eyes on the prize, which I relate to a lot. Since I was very young, I’ve had a passion for acting and dancing, which is the same with Jessi. I started training in ballet at two years old, and I love dancing.

PC: Throughout Season 1, there are a lot of important lessons to learn from The Baby-Sitters Club. Which one resonated the most with you?
Anais: The lesson that I saw that recurred the most throughout the show is that friends can help you through anything. In most of the problems in the show, your friends can help you through it. The Baby-Sitters Club shows the power of friendship and that your friends can help you through anything, and I feel like that is a very heartwarming message.

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: Guilty pleasure TV show?
Anais: Black-ish and Family Reunion.

PC: Guilty pleasure movie?
Anais: Us and Little.

PC: Favorite book?
Anais: Flowers in the Attic.

PC: Favorite play or musical?
Anais: Mean Girls.

PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Anais: Recently, I’ve been loving Avenue Beat.

PC: Who would play you in the story of your life?
Anais: My twin sister, Mirabelle.[laughs]
