Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Sophie Michelle

Sophie Michelle

Sophie Michelle is a triple threat who’s no stranger to the limelight. At the age of eleven, she started creating content (and her brand) on her YouTube channel, which now has over 780,000 subscribers! Yes, you read that correctly: 780,000!

This April, she leads the cast of Brat TV’s newest series, Stage Fright, as lovable stage manager Lizzy, who, along with her friends, tries to solve a gripping mystery. Pop Culturalist caught up with Sophie to chat about the series and her multifaceted career!

Career

PC: You’re an actress, musician, and content creator. How did you discover your passion for the arts? Is there one that you naturally gravitate towards?
Sophie: Yes! Before I started my YouTube channel, I always knew that I wanted to do something related to the arts. I started ballet lessons when I was a little girl, and music was always something I loved. My passion for acting is something that I’ve been more focused on lately.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Sophie: Definitely my mom. She has had such a huge influence on me, and she continues to support me one hundred percent in my artistic career. I’ve known that I wanted to perform my whole life, so I’m really thankful that she let me pursue this at such a young age.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your young career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Sophie: Thank you! This journey has had so many amazing moments, but one moment in particular that stands out is the first time I heard my music playing on the radio! I was in total shock. It felt so amazing and really validated all the hard work I was putting in.

Stage Fright

PC: Tell us about Stage Fright, your character, and what drew you to this project.
Sophie: Stage Fright is a comedy murder mystery where four unlikely friends try to solve a case about a mysterious chandelier accident. It’s such a fun show that will keep you guessing to the last minute. I play Lizzy, the stage manager at the school theater program. She’s very loyal and passionate. As soon as I read the script, I knew I wanted to be part of the project. It’s so well written, and the cast and crew are just amazing!

PC: Did you have any nerves heading into this project given that you’re the lead?
Sophie: I wouldn’t say “nervous.” I was extremely excited! I definitely had some butterflies while playing Lizzy because the character was written so well. I definitely wanted to make sure I brought her to life and that the fans would love her as much as I do!

PC: The series tackles a lot of important themes. Which one resonated with you the most and why?
Sophie: For me, one of the most important themes in the show is about the power of friendship. Throughout the series, you see these four classmates work together to solve a mystery bigger than any one of them. They go through a lot of ups and downs together, but ultimately they build a great friendship that helps them solve some major challenges!
