Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Samantha Moon
Samantha Moon is already a distinguished veteran on the international music scene. The R&B singer-songwriter has racked up a decade’s worth of experience, having burst onto the scene in 2010 as a lead vocalist in Natral Vybz International, one of the most renowned bands in Dominica. In 2018, she stepped out on her own and released her debut EP, Wake Up Now, much to the delight of her fans, and hasn’t looked back since. This year, she shows another side of her vulnerability and honesty with the release of “I Love You.” We caught up with Samantha to learn more about the single and this next chapter in her already impressive career.
PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Samantha: My family has always been into music. I’ve been exposed to music since a young age.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Samantha: Personally, I would say my family. Professionally, there are a lot of artists that I grew up listening to.
PC: You started your career in a group. What did you learn about yourself through that experience that you’ve been able to apply to your solo career moving forward?
Samantha: Definitely how to perform and entertain on the stage. That was something that I got comfortable with while I was in the band.
PC: Tell us about “I Love You” and the inspiration behind the song.
Samantha: The song is talking about love. It was also inspired by my sister, who was diagnosed with cancer. It’s something I feel everyone can relate to.
PC: If you had to pick one song that you’ve released that best encompasses you as an artist, what would it be and why?
Samantha: I would say “I Love You.” It wasn’t based on an idea. It was an actual real experience.
PC: Having been a part of this industry for a couple of years now, what’s one thing you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Samantha: I would say the business side of it because no matter how good your music is, you always have to have the proper promotion and all of that in order to get the music to the masses.
