Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Overthinking with Kat & June’s Alexia Dox

Nothing is better than the ability to make someone laugh, and Alexia Dox can do just that. She’s one of the funniest ladies in Hollywood, and one-half of your new favorite show, Overthinking with Kat & June, airing exclusively on YouTube Premium. The laugh-out-loud series follows a reluctant friendship forming between two roommates as they share their hopes, dreams, fears, and yes, inner thoughts. Pop Culturalist spoke with Alexia about the series.

PC: Tell us about Overthinking with Kat & June, your character, and what drew you to this project.
Alexia: Overthinking with Kat & June is about two women in their mid-twenties who find themselves living together. They’re strangers, and they each find the other to be weird and strange. Throughout the series, though, they begin to realize that they might actually be friends.

When I read the pilot, I thought it was so well-written and so funny. It has these two female characters who aren’t perfect; they both have faults and I love that! I also think it’s so cool that you can hear their inner thoughts. A lot of times, especially for June, what she thinks isn’t necessarily what she ends up saying. Kat, on the other hand, says exactly what she thinks without a filter. What I love about my character, June, is she’s very vulnerable. She has a lot of characteristics that I find in myself. I immediately clicked with her humor and the way she thinks about the world.

I love the fact that the show was created by a woman, it stars women, it’s run by women, and it’s about female friendship. It’s truly a special show and I was really lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of it.

PC: There’s a natural chemistry that comes across between you and Tenea. How did you build that bond and how did you approach your characters’ dynamic?
Alexia: It’s funny because it was instantaneous. We tested together for the roles and I felt my sense of humor gelled well with June’s and hers with Kat’s. We met each other at the testing and hung out once before we started shooting, but once we got on set, it felt like meeting up with an old friend. Everything just clicked. I feel so lucky to have been paired with someone who ended up being such a great match.

There’s even one episode where the director had us improv and it was cool to see how our natural sense of humor came out and meshed well.

PC: Kat and June get themselves into a lot of different, funny situations. Which was your favorite and why?
Alexia: Oh my gosh! My favorite to shoot was the double date scene where Tenea’s character, Kat, meets this really hot guy and she’s like, “Oh my God. He’s perfect for me,” and she makes June go out with his depressed brother. We had so much fun filming that one. Kat teaches June how to get a guy and what the rules are, but June’s interpretation is really hysterical and a little off base.

PC: Beside June’s relationship with Kat, which was your favorite to explore and why?
Alexia: It’s so hard to choose! Their landlord and her boss have to be my favorite ones. The one with her boss is so cringe-worthy at times, but she loves and admires her so much. She pushes herself to get noticed by her boss and that was a lot of fun to play out.

PC: What’s a topic that you overthink?
Alexia: Oh my gosh. What’s a topic I overthink? Probably meeting new people or meeting people that I admire. You know when you meet someone and you’re thinking about all the incredible things they’ve done, but you have to tone it down? Then over the course of the conversation, you’re like, “Why did I say that? This person probably thinks I’m the worst and super annoying. Why did I do that?” That’s probably a situation I overthink.

PC: What do you hope audiences take away from Overthinking with Kat & June?
Alexia: This series is about female friendship and it’s depicted in a way that I don’t think has been portrayed on screen a lot. You catch these two women who don’t really know if they want to be friends. They struggle with the weight of the other person in their life, so they try to make the best of it, but as the series progresses, they start to realize, “Hey, this person might actually be good for me. This person kind of complements me well.”
