Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Max and Harvey

Whether they’re creating content as the number-one UK act on TikTok, releasing hits like “Worry A Little Less,” or interviewing peers on their podcast, School Daze, Max and Harvey have proven they have the X factor. We caught up with the two teen phenomena to chat about their careers, how social media has influenced their paths, and what’s ahead in 2021.

PC: How did you both discover your passion for music?
Max and Harvey: We’ve loved music since we were babies. We always sang in the car with our dad. We loved every aspect of it ever since!

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Max and Harvey: Social media has probably had the biggest influence, as a lot of our career revolves around it. We really developed newfound confidence when we started using it.

PC: You both have had a lot of success throughout the years. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Max and Harvey: The first time that we played a main stage evening performance at a festival was one of the biggest and coolest experiences we’ve been a part of.

PC: What’s one fun fact about your brother that fans would be surprised to learn?
Max: When Harvey’s driving, he gets a severe case of road rage. [laughs]

Harvey: Max had his wing mirror smashed off of his car in a minor accident.

PC: Tell us about your new single, “Worry A Little Less.” What inspired the song?
Max and Harvey: We wanted to write a song that could motivate people to direct their worries to the more important things and to “worry a little less” about the less important things.

PC: You guys have been steadily releasing music throughout the years. If you had to pick one of your songs that best encompasses who you are as artists, what would it be and why?
Max and Harvey: It would either have to be “Where Were You” or “Worry A Little Less,” as they are the songs that we relate to the most. They had such a good flow as we were writing them. Writing can be extremely hard sometimes, but with those two, it was so natural.

PC: You also recently launched your very first podcast. Tell us about School Daze with Max and Harvey, how it came to fruition, and what listeners can expect each week.
Max and Harvey: School Daze is such an awesome podcast because we get to talk to amazing celebrities about a time in their life that they hardly ever talk about. There are some really juicy stuff and interesting conversations with people who are dealing with things like Tourette’s, ADHD, identity, and so much more. There are two episodes a week with loads of different and funny segments. It’s a fast-paced podcast, so it’s loads of fun!

PC: As we look ahead to 2021, what does the year hold for you guys?
Max and Harvey: We’re hoping to really knuckle down on releasing music and figuring out properly who we are as musicians because as we get older, the easier it is to decide on what kind of music we want to release. We’re working on loads of new stuff as of now, and we can’t wait for people to hear it!

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Max: Eminem, as I don’t listen to him often.

Harvey: Muse. I’m really into rock music.

PC: First album you bought?
Max: It would’ve been one of McFly’s early ones.

Harvey: JLS’ debut album.

PC: First concert you attended?
Max: The Vamps at the O2 in London.

Harvey: Same!

PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Max: Jon Bellion’s Glory. It really changed the way I sang and looked at music.

Harvey: Neotheater—AJR. They completely changed the way I look at/consume music, which also made me think more in depth when I’m writing music about every tiny choice that is made.

PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Max: The O2 Arena.

Harvey: Madison Square Garden.

PC: A must-have on the road?
Max: My headphones so I can shut off from the world every so often.

Harvey: A pair of swimming shorts, no joke, because you never know when you might bump into a swimming pool!
