Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Lovi Poe

Acclaimed Filipina actress and recording artist Lovi Poe has established herself as an international icon to keep your eye on. Her latest single, “Candy”, is a summer anthem that’s heating up the airwaves, and a track that you’ll definitely have on repeat! Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Lovi about her career, “Candy”, and so much more.

PC: How did you discover your passion for arts?
Lovi: When I was a kid, I would carry around my cassette tapes to every children’s party I attended just so I could perform in case someone asked. Quite embarrassing but right then I knew.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Lovi: My father’s legacy has influenced me in so many ways.

PC: There are so many different facets to your talent. Which one comes the most naturally? Which is the most challenging?
Lovi: I’ve been acting for years. It’s a big part of me. On the best days, it’s something that doesn’t even involve thinking for me—it just flows. The most challenging part is when you lose confidence in yourself. Days like that are tough.

PC: What have you learned from acting that you’ve been able to apply to your music career and vice versa?
Lovi: Using experience as a tool.

PC: Tell us about “Candy” and the inspiration behind the song and accompanying music video.
Lovi: It’s a very fun, easygoing song—something that you can dance to. It’s for people who want to have a good time.

PC: You’re getting ready to drop a new EP this fall. What can fans expect?
Lovi: There’s a little something for everyone.

PC: If you had to choose one song off the EP that best encompasses who you are as an artist, which would it be and why?
Lovi: I think it would be “Lost.” I guess it has something to do with how it escalates.

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Lovi: Rob Zombie or Marilyn Manson.

PC: First album you bought?
Lovi: I think it was the Spice Girls.

PC: First concert you attended?
Lovi: Maybe Chris Daughtry or one famous Filipino band called South Border.

PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Lovi: Little Voice by Sara Bareilles. I came to believe in destiny because of that album. I had originally picked up a Mariah CD, but I think it got switched with another customer’s. I was upset at first, but when I started listening to it, I became an instant fan.

PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Lovi: Royal Albert Hall.

PC: A must-have on the road?
Lovi: Headphones.
