Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Just Add Magic’s Aubrey Miller

Aubrey Miller is back and cooking up yet another spellbinding performance as Hannah Parker-Kent in Amazon Prime’s Just Add Magic. The hit family series follows three best friends who discover a magical cookbook in the attic and embark on adventures full of magic and mystery. But in season three, there’s an unexpected twist that even Aubrey didn’t see coming. Pop Culturalist had the pleasure of speaking with Aubrey about Just Add Magic, her new single “Crossing My Heart”, and how she’s remained grounded despite all of her success.

PC: The new season of Just Add Magic premiered on Friday. What can you tease about season three?
Aubrey: This season has an unexpected twist, which is a lot of fun. The three best friends are back, solving a new mystery, and there’s plenty of magic. I think the fans will be excited to see what’s to come.


PC: How has Hannah grown throughout the seasons?
Aubrey: Hannah’s confidence with magic has grown. She’s always been a warrior, though. At the beginning, she was a little skeptical of the magic, but as the seasons have gone on, she’s become a stronger protector and more confident in her ability with the book. It’s cool to see her skills grow and her ability to crack the codes.

PC: With three seasons under your belt, has there been anything about the experience or your character’s development that surprised you?
Aubrey: This season, something new happens to Hannah, which was a bit unexpected, but the way that the characters deal with the situation is a good message for everyone.

PC: Why do you think Just Add Magic has resonated so well with audiences?
Aubrey: It’s a show that the whole family can enjoy, from the kids to the grandparents. There’s mystery, there’s magic, and it’s also sweet.

PC: If you could write a storyline for Hannah, what would it be and why?
Aubrey: I would really love to see more of Hannah’s musical side. We’ve seen her play the piano with Miss Silvers and take lessons from her. I’d love to see her under a magic singing spell.

PC: That’s the perfect segue! You have a new single out. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind “Crossing My Heart”?
Aubrey: I had a story in mind that I think is really relatable about crossing paths with someone, but never quite meeting. It’s about wondering if this person even knows that you exist. I’ve had a similar situation and I think a lot of other people have, as well. I wanted to pull inspiration from that and create my song.

PC: You’ve released a few singles now, are there any plans to release maybe a larger body of work: an EP or potential album?
Aubrey: Absolutely. I would love to continue to release more music, especially an EP or album, but I’m excited for my single at the moment.

PC: You sing, you dance, and you act. Is there one that you naturally gravitate towards?
Aubrey: I truly have a passion for all three. They all play so nicely with one another. I couldn’t pick just one. I’ve been dancing my whole life, so that’s something that’s just in me; music has always been a huge inspiration and had a big impact in my life; and acting is such an incredible thing that I feel so blessed to get to do all the time. All three are part of me and I couldn’t pick just one.


PC: When you look at your career, is there a moment that stands out to you?
Aubrey: Every job and opportunity that I’ve had has a special place in my heart, from my work on Austin & Ally and Sam & Cat to Just Add Magic to releasing my new single. They’re all special moments that I get to look back on and feel really blessed about.

PC: What would you say is the biggest lesson you’ve learned being a part of this industry?
Aubrey: Probably just continuously staying true to who I am and not sacrificing my morals or myself for the industry. I’m always very true to myself and never want to lose that in this industry, however crazy it may get.

PC: What do you still want to accomplish in your career?
Aubrey: There are always new goals and new ways to grow. I would love to release an album, like you mentioned, or do a movie. I would love to do Broadway: that’s always been a dream of mine!

Aubrey: My family, clean water, and a boat so we can escape.

Aubrey: The last show I binge-watched was a K-Drama called Still 17.

PC: Who was the last person you called or texted?
Aubrey: The last person I texted was my friend, Chloe, and the last person I called was my grandma.

PC: Most used emoji?
Aubrey: It’s a cross between the purple heart and the laughing so hard that I’m crying face.

PC: A place you would like to visit?
