Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Jack Conway

It’s easy to see why Jack Conway is one of music’s most exciting new voices. With a sound and talent that rivals any, Jack is making 2020 his year. On top of the three singles already under his belt this year—including “Caught in the Rain,” the infectious love song inspired by The Notebook—Jack has just dropped a real banger with the track “Easy.” Pop Culturalist caught up with Jack to chat about “Easy,” how he channels his past experiences into his artistry, and what’s ahead.

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Jack: I started playing piano when I was really young, but it wasn’t really until I was in my high school show choir where I discovered my true passion for music. Just seeing the way that songs move people and the impact they have, it really inspired me to want to touch people on that deep of a level. I think about it—we relate music to memories, whether it be for graduation, weddings, songs for two people in a relationship, funerals, etc. It’s incredible the emotion we can evoke as musicians.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Jack: The biggest thing that influenced my career was my childhood. Without going too far into depth, it wasn’t exactly pretty. Yet the person who has influenced my career has been my brother Paul. Paul and I have gone through thick and thin together, and truthfully, he’s been my biggest supporter since day one. He has stood behind me since we were kids and has been the biggest fan of mine since I started writing/playing—which let me tell you, not every song he’s heard has been too pretty.

PC: Growing up, you were heavily involved with sports. What has the transition been like going from sports to music? How have sports prepared you for your career in music?
Jack: Sports have really prepared me to be a musician because it has allowed me to be a team player. Whether it be for cowriting, coproducing, or understanding the importance of a full team, I can effectively communicate as well as take constructive feedback.

PC: Tell us about your new single, “Easy.” What was the inspiration behind the track?
Jack: “Easy” was written about my previous romantic relationships and the unfortunate complications that every single one of them seemed to fall into. Regardless, whether the relationship is good or bad overall, we all know the times where things are easy. This song is more so reminiscing on the easy times of a relationship. Call it infatuation, the honeymoon phase, or puppy love—every relationship has its amazing, lovely, and “easy” moments.

PC: You’ve released a few singles so far in your career. If you had to choose one that best encompasses you as an artist, what would it be and why?
Jack: Out of all the songs I have released so far, I would say that “Caught in the Rain” encompasses me best as an artist. “Caught in the Rain” has a cool/edgy vibe with passionate lyrics/melody. It encompasses me as an artist/person because I am very passionate about everything I do and I like to keep things pretty uncomplicated in life. As one would say, it can be pretty “easy.”

PC: You’re releasing your highly-anticipated EP this year. What can fans expect? What do you hope to get across with the EP?
Jack: Fans can expect a whole swarm of feelings. No one song is like the other, and that’s exactly what I was going for. Some are super-fun, upbeat pop songs versus others that are just piano and vocal. I hope to simply portray a diverse portfolio to my fans, understand their feedback, and then give them more of what they like. I love writing pop, rock, country—you name it—so that gives me the advantage to keep evolving as not only a songwriter but as an artist as well.

PC: As you look ahead to the rest of 2020, what does the year hold for you?
Jack: I am going to be releasing music quite a bit this year. Not only do I have five-plus songs recorded already but I have been writing many new songs as well so I can get back in the studio and have a total of one song a month to release.

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

Jack: Linkin Park—Hybrid Theory

PC: First concert you attended?
