Myla Finks and Chelsea Glover, better known as Hello Sunday, made history on the seventeenth season of The Voice. They were the youngest duo to ever compete in the competition, wowing audiences with their jaw-dropping vocals and pitch-perfect harmonies. They made it all the way to the semifinals, building a worldwide fan base.
Since then, they’ve been on a whirlwind tour of appearances, press interviews, and performances and recently dropped their empowering new single, “I Like It.” Pop Culturalist caught up with the dynamic duo to chat about the song and about life after The Voice.
PC: How did you both discover your passion for music?
Myla: I discovered my passion for music after I realized that my family really loved what I did. They supported my music, and it put a smile on their faces.
Chelsea: I started singing when I was very young, around six or seven. I sung a gospel song, and I saw the reaction people had and that they were really into it. I realized if I could make this kind of impact, I should do it professionally.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your careers?
Chelsea: My parents. They sacrificed a lot to get me to this point. Professionally, I’d say Beyoncé. Her work ethic is amazing. She knows how to connect to all generations.
Myla: I would have to agree with Chelsea. My parents influenced me a lot. They encouraged me to go after this dream. The other person who has influenced me is Ariana Grande. She also has a great work ethic.
PC: You both just competed on Season 17 of The Voice and were the youngest duo in the history of the competition. What was the biggest takeaway from that experience?
Myla: The biggest takeaway was getting to experience the industry. As fourteen-year-olds, it prepared us for what it’ll be like as we get older in this industry.
Chelsea: We grew a lot during this journey from talking to the other contestants, learning from them, and learning from the coaches as well.
PC: Speaking of the coaches, what was the best advice Kelly Clarkson gave you?
Chelsea: The best piece of advice that she gave us was to be comfortable in your own skin and to be true to yourself.
Myla: I agree with Chelsea! Those were two great pieces of advice that she gave us.
PC: When you look back at your journey, what stands out the most?
Myla: When I look back at our journey, one thing that stands out to me is the fact that Chelsea and I were able to work together and be a team on that show. We did our best with each performance.
Chelsea: I agree with Myla. We did this together. It’s hard being a solo artist, and it was great having Myla by my side.
PC: Did you learn anything new about each other from this competition?
Chelsea: [laughs] I learned a lot of things about Myla. We train together three or four times a week, but we were out there for months. Myla is an extrovert, and I’m an introvert. She likes to go out there and get things, and I like to lay back and chill.
Myla: One thing that I learned about Chelsea is basically what she just said! I learned that she’s an introvert at times and that I’m an extrovert. I think that really helped our dynamic.
PC: How has your life changed since competing on The Voice?
Myla: When I go out now, people will stop me and be like, “You’re one of the Hello Sunday girls!” or “You’re Myla from The Voice!” It feels great to know that we made a difference and we got our names out there.
Chelsea: I have to agree with her on that. A lot of people will stop me and be like, “Is that one of the Hello Sunday girls?” I have young girls come up to me and tell me that we’re an inspiration to them and that we’ve had an impact in their lives.
PC: You have a new single out. Tell us about “I Like It” and the inspiration behind the song.
Chelsea: “I Like It” is about being confident in yourself. A lot of people, especially teenagers, have a lot of insecurities, and we like to talk about what we don’t like about ourselves. But we want people to know when you look in the mirror, you’re more than a ten!
PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2020, what does the year hold for Hello Sunday?
Chelsea: Myla and I want to do more interviews, have our own show one day on Disney or Nickelodeon, and we’d love to have a record deal.
Myla: I see those things in our future!
PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Myla: Tina Turner
Chelsea: I don’t think anyone would be surprised by what I listen to. I listen to a lot of artists right now.
PC: First album you bought?
Myla: Ariana Grande’s thank u next
Chelsea: Michael Jackson’s Bad
PC: First concert you attended?
Chelsea: Fun fact: I’ve never been to a concert.
Myla: Mindless Behavior
PC: An album that changed your life?
Myla: Sam Smith’s The Thrill Of It All.
Chelsea: The Jackson 5
PC: A must-have on the road?
Chelsea: Water and peanuts.
Myla: My phone and water.
