Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Harrison Cone

Harrison Cone is a multitalented artist who has proven that it’s never too early to follow your dreams. At a young age, Harrison knew he wanted to pursue a career in the arts, and he did everything in his power to make that dream a reality. At thirteen, he taught himself to produce music. By fourteen, he moved from Colorado to Los Angeles to work as a musician and actor. And at fifteen, he graduated high school.

This year Harrison has dropped a string of singles, including his latest song “Wave.” Pop Culturalist sat down with Harrison to chat about his exciting career.

PC: You have a really interesting story about discovering your passion for the arts. What was the moment when it all clicked for you?
Harrison: It took me a year and a half to grasp how to produce. Once I learned how to produce, that’s when it all came together. That’s when I knew I wanted to do something in music. I was already acting at the time, but this is when I knew I could take everything I learned on guitar, piano, and other instruments and put it into one place.

PC: Once you knew you wanted to pursue a career in the arts, you worked really hard to make those dreams come true. Who or what has instilled that work ethic in you?
Harrison: My parents, for sure. They have a strong work ethic. They’ve always told me how important it is to follow your dreams and do what you love. They believe it’s important to go for your dreams as soon as possible. People always say, “Don’t worry. You’re young. You have time.” But then in a blink of an eye, time has flown by.

PC: Is it a challenge to balance your career and live life as a normal teenager?
Harrison: Yeah, for sure. I graduated high school last year. I took a couple of months doing school nonstop so that I could do music. During that time, I couldn’t do music or have a social life. I’m from Colorado, but I live in Los Angeles doing online schooling. I lost a lot of friends.

PC: You sing, write, act, produce, and dance. Is there one that you naturally gravitate towards?
Harrison: I would say acting and music simultaneously.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Harrison: Definitely my parents, and there are a couple of artists like Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth.

PC: You have a new single out. Tell us about “Wave” and what inspired that track.
Harrison: I wanted to make a song that represented who I am as an artist. I feel like I write honestly about the struggles that teens have—like other people really don’t care about younger people’s dreams. The chorus is about not caring about what people think and doing what I want to do. In the verses, I talked more about teenage relationships and how when you’re with someone you like you daydream about what you want to do with them, like going on an adventure and making memories. And it’s hard to be the first one to be real about your feelings and what you actually want to do in the moment.

PC: You’ve released a few singles now. If you had to pick one that best encompasses you as an artist, what would it be and why?
Harrison: Probably “Wave”! I think it’s my most unique and diverse song of mine.

PC: What does the rest of the year hold for you as we look ahead to the end of 2019 into 2020?
Harrison: I want to make some good memories and grow as an artist. I want to continue to make more music.

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Harrison: That’s hard! Maybe Roy Blair? I don’t think a lot of people would think I like alternative indie music.

PC: First album you ever bought?
Harrison: I think my dad bought me a Jimi Hendrix album, but the first one I bought was probably a Jonas Brothers album.

PC: First concert you attended?
Harrison: Probably seeing my dad. The first one that I bought a ticket for was probably XXXTentacion. Oh wait—I saw Justin Bieber for free the year before that.

PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Harrison: It has to be the album with Metro Boomin and 21 Savage. It made me want to learn how to produce. You don’t normally see the producer mentioned on the cover, but this one did. I listened to the whole album, and I started doing research on producing.

PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Harrison: I want to tour and perform anywhere around the world.

PC: An artist you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Harrison: Justin Bieber, Drake, or Post Malone.

To keep up with Harrison, follow him on Twitter and Instagram, and pick up “Wave” on Amazon Music, iTunes, or stream it on Spotify.
