Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Gina DiGiorgio

Earlier this year, Gina DiGiorgio made a big splash with “This Isn’t That.” The single quickly racked up over sixty thousand streams on Spotify, establishing Gina one to watch in 2020. She’s back now with yet another smash hit and we were lucky enough to chat with Gina about “Pay Me No Mind” and the inspiration behind the song.

PC: You have a new single out now. Tell us about “Pay Me No Mind” and the inspiration behind the song.
Gina: I wanted to write a song that a lot of people can relate to. It’s about not valuing people who don’t value you.

PC: You collaborated with Clyde Kelly for this song. How did that partnership come to fruition?
Gina: I really like his music. I reached out to him and asked if he’d be interested in collaborating on it. He liked the idea. It ended up being a really good fit. We both had such a fun time writing it. We worked back and forth on email. Then he sent me a demo that he recorded. Then I recorded my part.

PC: You’ve released a few singles this year. If you had to pick one that best encompasses who you are as an artist, what would it be and why?
Gina: My favorite one is “Figure Out.” It’s the one I can relate to the most. It’s about overcoming something that may have brought you down in the past, but you’re not going to let it affect you anymore. You’re taking time to figure it out.

PC: “Figure Out” did incredibly well. It has over a hundred thousand streams on Spotify alone. Does that add any pressure for future releases? What has that response meant to you?
Gina: People have really responded well to the song. It has a cool beat to it and deep lyrics. For me, I just have to keep getting better with each release. I have to raise the stakes.

PC: What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned about yourself thus far in your career?
Gina: The biggest lesson would be to make the music that you like. If people like it, great. If they don’t, that’s fine too. Not everybody is going to like it. You have to make what you like and what you think sounds good.
