Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with EVER

Alt-pop artist EVER made her mark on the industry when she released her four-track debut EP, Golden Hour, in 2019. It quickly racked up over four hundred thousand streams, receiving support from Spotify, BBC Introducing, and Euphoria Magazine, leaving listeners wanting more. Well, that time has come! EVER is back with her first release of 2020, titled “Counting Flowers,” a track that marks the next chapter in her already impressive career and highlights her growth as an artist and songwriter. Pop Culturalist caught up with EVER to chat about the release of “Counting Flowers.”

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
EVER: If I’m honest, I don’t remember a real defining moment when I found my passion. It was more of a slow and gradual process. From around six, I was mimicking artists on TV, drawing my stage outfits in fluffy notebooks, printing the lyrics to my favorite song at the time, and practicing in my bedroom for hours and hours.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
EVER: I went to see Christine and the Queens a couple of years ago, and that definitely had a huge impact on me. Seeing her confidence, artistry, attention to detail, flawless vocals—the entire night was such an inspiration and fired me up to put my own music out there.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success throughout your career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
EVER: Thank you! There are two moments that stand out: hearing my songs on TV for the first time and seeing people listen to my music all around the world. That will never ever get old to me.

PC: Tell us about “Counting Flowers” and the inspiration behind the song.
EVER: “Counting Flowers” is a love letter to my grandma. It talks about the exchange of roles, where she once looked after me and now I look after her. It’s a very bittersweet transition, even though I know it’s a natural one. When I was writing the lyrics, I felt very lucky to have so many memories to choose from that I could include. But one of my favorites was always how much time we spent in the garden, planting, sowing, and harvesting. Little did I know at the time that she was already showing me the cycles of life I would encounter in the years to come.

PC: This is the first single following your debut EP. How will this next body of work differentiate itself?
EVER: My new music was all written with the intention to gradually mature the sound and keep evolving. With the lovely feedback to my debut EP, that’s definitely given me more confidence, when writing new music, to try and push my own boundaries and experiment more with what I’m creating.

PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2020, what does the year hold for you?
EVER: Definitely more new music! Looking to get more songs out that I’ve been working on and then building towards the next body of work early next year.

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
EVER: Pussycat Dolls’ first album: PCD. Absolute bangers.

PC: First album?
EVER: I think it was Corinne Bailey Rae’s debut album.

PC: First concert you attended?
EVER: Beyoncé’s SASHA FIERCE tour. Unbelievably good!

PC: An album that changed your life and why?
EVER: Eva Cassidy’s Songbird. It was the first time I experienced goosebumps, and immediately I wanted to try and make music to make others feel a similar way.

PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform?
EVER: Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

PC: A must-have on the road?
EVER: All the snacks.
