Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Along Came the Devil 2’s Bruce Davison

Bruce Davison

Bruce Davison is a legend in Hollywood. With over 250 credits to his name, he’s done it all in his career. This October, he’s reprising his role as Reverend Michael in the hauntingly scary, Along Came the Devil 2. Pop Culturalist caught up with Bruce to chat about Along Came the Devil 2 and why it’s a must-see film.

PC: You’re reprising your role as Reverend Michael in Along Came the Devil 2. Tell us about the sequel and what fans can expect.
Bruce: Well, they can expect Reverend Michael to return. [laughs] Sydney Sweeney’s character was the focus of the first film; this one focuses on her sister, played by Laura Wiggins. There’s a lot happening, and Reverend Michael is the only person who knows what’s going on, which is unfortunate for my character. It’s a horror film that you need to see. It has a great story and you’ll find yourself caring for these characters.

PC: When you initially signed on for this project, did you know that there was the possibility of there being a sequel? Was the preparation different?
Bruce: I had no idea! There were parts in the first film where I thought, “This is it for Reverend Michael. He’s about to be carted away.”

PC: What initially attracted you to this project?

Bruce: A friend of mine introduced me to the DeVans, who are filmmakers living out in Georgia. I really liked them dearly. They’re good people and they make films by the seat of their pants using their own money and creativity. They really care about what they’re doing, which is quite refreshing. It was a nice opportunity to be with them and a part of that family. It was absolutely a family operation, right down to relatives doing the catering. We would also all go to see the Avengers films on our weekend off. It was so much fun to be down there with them.

PC: You’ve had an illustrious career and have played several religious figures. Which, if any, were the most helpful in shaping Reverend Michael?
Bruce: Oh gosh. I learned some Latin doing a film called Camp Hell. I learned the Saint Michael’s prayer in Latin, so that was super helpful.

PC: Jason and Heather DeVan have both said in previous interviews that they’ve learned a lot from working with you. What was that collaboration like? Did you share any words of wisdom with them?

Bruce: That’s so nice to hear. I love making movies and I enjoy working with people who have a passion for it. They’re very passionate about their work—they really love it. It’s something that they take joy in, and that’s always so much more fun. I’ve done a few films in the past where we were working under the pressure of the studio. With independent films, you never know what will come out of it, but you always feel like part of the gang.
