Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Allegra Miles

All eyes are on Allegra Miles. Since her impressive run to the semifinals of NBC’s The Voice, the talented singer-songwriter has been hard at work in the studio. She’s taking the lessons she’s learned from the experience and creating hits like “Eyes”.

We recently caught up with Allegra to learn more about what she’s been up to since The Voice, her creative process, and her new single.

PC: The last time we spoke, you were competing on The Voice. How has your life changed since? What have you been up to?
Allegra: I’ve grown as a person, but it’s also changed a lot in my life. I feel like I’m much more able and prepared to go after music. Of course, I took away the exposure, the experience, and the connections. I have tons of connections in the industry as well as other people who were on the show. I’ve been writing a lot. Gigging as much as possible, considering COVID and everything. I’m working on new music that I’ll be releasing soon.

PC: What was the biggest lesson you learned from that experience that you’ve now been able to apply to your career moving forward?
Allegra: The biggest lesson I learned was to trust my instincts. I definitely overthink a lot, as many people do, especially with my art. I get so self-critical to the extent where it’s not helpful. The experience helped me get out of my head a lot because you can’t be in your head when you’re trying to sing for millions of people on TV. That helped me a lot on the show and moving forward—I’m not getting in my head as much and just letting the creative process flow.

PC: Tell us about your song, “Eyes”. What inspired it?
Allegra: I wrote it over the summer. It was a particular experience of looking in someone’s eyes, as the song says. It was cool because I’ve never had a specific moment and then wrote a song about it later. I felt a very strong connection with someone solely through their eyes. It’s interesting because they say eyes are the windows to the soul. That was the inspiration behind it.

PC: What is your creative process like? How has it changed throughout the years?
Allegra: I get inspiration at the weirdest, most random times and about the weirdest things. I’m pretty disorganized. I almost never sit down and say, “Oh, I’m going to write a song.” You know what I mean? It’s like it goes into random voice snippets and memos. I’ll be doing something in the car or whatever and I’ll have a random idea for a lyric. Then sometimes I get a wave of inspiration, which is cool when that happens. It flows from there, but it really depends on the song. It depends on where I’m at in my life and at that moment.

PC: As you look ahead in your career, what do you hope to accomplish in the next five to ten years?
Allegra: My big goal other than releasing music consistently is to tour eventually. Overall, I always say my two goals in life are travel plus music. Even if it’s not through touring, I want to see the world, and I want to hopefully do that with music because touring would be so cool. I really want to collaborate with more artists, too.

PC: Do you have a dream collaboration?
Allegra: A dream that’s not realistic would be John Mayer, but that’s reaching for the stars. Daniel Caesar would be amazing. Mac Ayres would be amazing, too.

To keep up with Allegra, follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Spotify. Pick up or stream “Eyes” today.
