Aiden Myers is an exciting electro-pop artist from up North who’s making his presence known on an international scale. This year, he’s gearing up to release his highly anticipated debut album, Overthinking, and we’re getting our first taste of the record with the newly released single “Alone Tonight.” Pop Culturalist caught up with this fast-rising superstar to chat about the year ahead.
PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Aiden: With my dad being a touring musician when I was a kid, it was just infused into me. I would sit outside my dad’s basement studio and listen to them rehearse, taking in every note and curse word thrown around. [laughs] It just always resonated with me, and I’ve been at it ever since!
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Aiden: Easily my father! I take every record of mine to my dad to see what he thinks. Other than that, any of my favorite bands. Watching them live and listening to their records pumps me up more than anything.
PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Aiden: I think it’s the first time one of my songs hit Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. That was just a moment of knowing someone out there accepted me as an artist and decided to help boost my career.
PC: Tell us about your new single, “Alone Tonight.” What inspired the track?
Aiden: “Alone Tonight” is a true story of a toxic relationship I found myself in a couple of years back. It talks about how relationships can sometimes be one-sided, and you find yourself loving someone who’s too scared to be loved or love you back, which translates into you getting hurt and feeling used.
PC: “Alone Tonight” comes off your highly-anticipated debut album. What can fans expect with Overthinking?
Aiden: You can expect a cocktail of different emotions, from heartbreak to crippling anxiety and depression. I think there’s a song on the album for everyone, and I just hope they can connect to it on the same level I do.
PC: If you had to pick one song off Overthinking that best encompasses you as an artist, what would it be and why?
Aiden: I think it would be a song called “Help Me.” While I was recording the album, I got hit with an awful nervous breakdown, which completely discouraged me and put me in a hole. I wrote “Help Me” right when I was going through that spell, and it helped dig me out. It portrays the exact emotions I was going through when we wrote it, so I think that to me is one of the most important records on the album.
PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Aiden: Easy—Ludwig van Beethoven! I love classical music.
PC: First album you bought?
Aiden: John Mayer’s Room for Squares
PC: First concert you attended?
Aiden: Also John Mayer. [laughs] I like John Mayer, if you can’t tell.
PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Aiden: That’s also gotta be John. [laughs] His album Continuum literally got me through some of the hardest times in my life. Truth is, I’m not sure what exactly about it it was, but I just felt connected to everything he had to say on it.
PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Aiden: Easily a summer day at Budweiser Stage! That’s been a long-time dream.
PC: A must-have on the road?
Aiden: My vocal steamer and a lot of snacks.
