Adam Hender has emerged as one of music’s brightest young stars. In 2019, the UK singer-songwriter dropped a string of singles, including “Don’t Wake Me Up,” “One Chance,” “Burn,” and “I Don’t Mind,” which have quickly amassed over a million streams worldwide and caught the eye of Radio 1, Wonderland, Clash, and Tidal. This year, he builds on that success with the release of his highly anticipated debut album, Sick. Pop Culturalist had the pleasure of speaking with this breakout star.
PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Adam: I feel I’ve always had a huge passion for music and performing. Growing up in a big household, all my siblings would sing. One of my brothers got me into Michael Jackson at a really young age. I remember I had Moonwalker, the movie, and I used to practice the dance moves day in, day out. Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Adam: Growing up in a small town, I always wanted to get out and see the world. I definitely saw music as a way to do that. Also, like in the previous question, I’ve been surrounded by music from such a young age, and that was a massive influence.
PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your young career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Adam: I haven’t taken any of this early success for granted. I’ve counted them all as proud milestones. But if I had to pick one, it would be signing my record deal. That was a really good day.
PC: You’re getting ready to release your debut album. What can fans expect from Sick? What inspired the collection?
Adam: It has taken a number of years to write Sick. In truth, it is an extension of myself. I’m a big believer in writing honest music—stories I have experienced firsthand. Fans can expect raw, heartfelt honesty.
PC: If you had to choose one song off of Sick that best encompasses who you are as an artist, what would it be and why?
Adam: I couldn’t say one. They are all collectively me and describe me and my life in different ways. Hopefully, the entire album will give my fans an insight into me.
PC: With this being your debut album, what was the biggest lesson you learned about yourself as an artist?
Adam: I’ve wanted to get to this stage in my life for so long, and I’m proud to say I got here. I’ve learned that for a long time I didn’t believe in myself. But I know I do, and it’s a great feeling.
PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2020, what does the year hold for you?
Adam: Obviously with the pandemic things are difficult, but you can expect the album and possibly a virtual tour. I plan to make 2021 my year.
PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Adam: Anderson .Paak
PC: First album you bought?
Adam: Michael Jackson’s Bad.
PC: First concert you attended?
Adam: McFly’s Motion In The Ocean tour.
PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Adam: Michael Jackson’s Bad. I grew on his lyrics and believed his words. Plus, his music and melodies are just off the hook.
PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Adam: Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
PC: A must-have on the road?
Adam: Good company.
