Exclusive Interview: Kaylee Hottle Talks ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ Stepping Back Into Jia’s Shoes, Reuniting with the Creative Team, and More
Kaylee Hottle reprises her role as Jia in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, marking her triumphant return to a franchise that propelled her career to monstrous success.
The latest entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own.
Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Kaylee about Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, stepping back into her character’s shoes, reuniting with the creative team, and more.
PC: Jia’s journey of discovery and finding her place in the world is deeply resonant, and you brought so much depth to it. As an actress, how did you create the space for yourself to dive into that emotional arc? Did you draw upon any of your own personal experiences?
Kaylee: I was able to connect to this character because we share similar experiences. In this new film, Jia discovers where she comes from and learns about her heritage, much like I’ve experienced coming into young adulthood. This personal connection has helped deepen our bond.
PC: Adam [Wingard] and Terry [Rossio] are both back at the helm as director and writer. How did the trust that you built on Godzilla vs. Kong allow you to take agency over Jia’s journey in this film and empower you to make the creative decisions that you did?
Kaylee: I was just focused on doing my job and portraying Jia to the best of my ability, and everyone on set was incredibly supportive! I frequently discussed Adam’s vision and what he wanted to see from my character. Initially, the idea of returning made me nervous, but the excitement of reuniting with the same cast overshadowed any apprehension. With their unwavering support, I felt confident in my acting abilities.
PC: This is such a cinematic viewing experience, and so much of that gets added in post-production. What was it like getting to see it for the first time with all the effects added in? What scene are you most excited for audiences to see?
Kaylee: I am most excited for people to see what Jia is capable of. She is truly amazing in how she navigates relationships in both the human world and the monster world, showcasing incredible strength and power.
PC: You have been such a trailblazer for your community, and unfortunately, it’s still rare that we get to see deaf characters on film. What has this moment meant to you? Have you had time to reflect on the impact you’re having on audiences and representing your community?
Kaylee: Being able to be in this film has meant so much to me; it has been an unforgettable experience.
PC: This franchise has been one of your biggest projects to date. What’s been the most surprising part about this experience? What’s been the biggest takeaway?
Kaylee: Jia has taught me so much, and she has truly exemplified what I hope everyone takes away from this film: that everyone can find a place to belong.
