Adam Devine Talks Bumper in Berlin, How the Pitch Perfect Franchise Changed His Life, and Dream Cameo for Season 2

Adam Devine

Can you aca-believe it? Pitch Perfect‘s Adam Devine is back reprising his role in Bumper in Berlin.

Based on the film franchise that ignited a cultural phenomenon, Bumper in Berlin is a new musical comedy series now on Peacock that features a star-studded cast including Adam Devine, Sarah Hyland, Jameela Jamil, Lera Abova, and Flula Borg. Several years after we last saw him in Pitch Perfect, Adam Devine’s Bumper Allen moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin. The acclaimed series follows Bumper’s quest to transition from a capella amateur into bona fide superstar.

Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Adam about Bumper in Berlin, how this franchise changed his life, and his dream cameo for Season 2!

PC: Season 1 of Bumper in Berlin is now available to stream on Peacock. There’s a lot of potential to continue to expand on Bumper’s storyline and questions about his future. If we’re lucky enough to get a second season, where do you want to see Bumper’s storyline head?
Adam: We’re talking about that now, so I don’t want to give any spoilers. But we definitely have some ideas. I really hope that we get an official Season 2 pickup because we only did six episodes. I feel like we haven’t been able to tell his full story. I’m really excited to do more of this series, and it’s so fun to play this character. The Pitch Perfect movies truly changed my life. So not being in the third movie, I felt like I never got to put a bow on the Pitch Perfect experience. I leaped at the chance when Elizabeth Banks pitched the idea. I was like, “That sounds so fun. I would love to put a bow on it.”

PC: This franchise has been so successful. What do you think continues to resonate with audiences? Did you feel any pressure carrying that as it made its way to television?
Adam: No pressure. I just wanted it to feel big and not feel like a little show. I think visually we definitely did a great job of making Berlin look as cool and as beautiful as it is. Tonally, I wanted to keep the same tone as the Pitch Perfect movies but have it be a little faster paced because it’s a television show and you have to tell these stories in 30-minutes chunks. I was really excited to get back into this world and do it all over again.

PC: You’re also stepping into the shoes of an executive producer. Did anything surprise you about that experience of stepping back into this universe? Have you found the work that you’ve now done behind the camera has impacted the way that you approach this character on the screen?
Adam: Yeah. I’ve been very lucky in my career. The first thing that ever popped off for me was Workaholics. I created that show. I got to be in the edit bay and see everything from the writing process to the finished product. It gives you a wider scope to sit back and go, “It’s not about me and my lines that I’m saying right now.” You see more of the political pieces, and you’re able to put them together in a better fashion.

PC: Megan has said in the past that it was really important to establish Bumper and these new characters and not rely on cameos. That said, if we’re lucky enough to get a second season, is there a particular character that you’d like to see reappear in Bumper’s life? Who would it be and why?
Adam: I would have to say my girl Rebel. She’s like a sister to me. I call her my work wife. The first time that we worked together was on Workaholics. Then we got to do it again on the Pitch Perfect movies. Then I was in her movie Isn’t It Romantic. We’ve worked together a handful of times now. I truly love her. If she could take a break from being an international movie star and come play in my little show, we’d be over the moon if she wanted to do that.
