Mozart in the Jungle: 5 Favorite Moments

Mozart in the Jungle Season 3 Poster

Rejoice, classical music and television lovers…Mozart in the Jungle is back! This kooky, polished, and entertaining show about the New York Symphony Orchestra and its maestro, Rodrigo (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a welcome return as other shows go on their mid-season breaks. At the end of last season, we left the orchestra up in turmoil with contract negotiations and Hailey (Lola Kirke) choosing a romantic relationship with the young benefactor over Rodrigo. We’re very much looking forward to seeing how that all plays out, but, in the meantime, here are five of our favorite moments from Mozart in the Jungle (so far).

When Rodrigo cuts his hair way back in season 1…because…well….duh. Look at him. He went from caliente to BEYOND caliente with just a few snips of hair.

Rodrigo’s chats with famous—and very dead—composers. Throughout the entirety of the show, Rodrigo (himself a young prodigy in the music world), has talks with various famed composers. Some of the composers he has heart-to-hearts with are Mozart (Santino Fontana) and Beethoven (Brian d’Arcy James). This whimsical approach to getting inside of Rodrigo’s head is such fun to watch.

Mozart in the Jungle traveled to Mexico in season 2 as a part of the orchestra’s Latin America tour. One of their biggest stops was in Mexico City which was a huge homecoming for Rodrigo. There were many, many moments of this portion of the show that were priceless (street meat and stolen violin, to name a few), but one that I highly enjoyed was when Hailey met Rodrigo’s grandmother. Naturally, his grandmother reads tea leaves and saw something about Rodrigo and Hailey’s future together. You could practically feel the anticipation, slight nervousness, and foreshadowing for the future.

Obviously, the behind-the-scenes moments of the orchestra rehearsing and coming together for a performance are always an interesting cornerstone of the show. No matter what they are preparing, it is refreshing to see classical music at the forefront of a television show. Plus, seeing all their blood, sweat, and tears pay off is so rewarding.

So, this isn’t really one particular moment, but the immense talent in Mozart in the Jungle deserves a shout-out. It is filled with fantastic actors (like Bernadette Peters, Malcolm McDowell, and Debra Monk) who easily move from serious to silly to heartfelt within the blink of an eye.
