Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Chrissy
Meet Chrissy, the powerhouse vocalist who is taking over the R&B scene. This October, she dropped her debut album…and let’s just say you don’t want to miss it—it’s definitely a vibe!
We had the pleasure of speaking with this fast rising star about getting her start, why she was always destined for a career in entertainment, and the release of Taken.
PC: How did you discover your passion for the arts?
Chrissy: Around nine, I discovered that I could actually sing. I feel like it was destined to happen, though, because I grew up in the music industry with my dad being a music producer. I feel like it was just what I was supposed to do.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Chrissy: My dad is number one. Also, I grew up listening to Brandy and Whitney Houston. They were huge inspirations growing up, and even today.
PC: In addition to music, you’re also an actress. How has your work in front of the camera made you a stronger musician and vice versa?
Chrissy: That’s a good question. It taught me not to be afraid to do things in front of people. When you’re in the studio, you’re not in front of a lot of people, but when you’re acting, you are, so you have to learn how to perform in front of people.
PC: You just dropped your debut album, Taken. What can fans expect?
Chrissy: They can expect a ’90s vibe and good music.
PC: What was the process like putting together the album?
Chrissy: I really got into my feelings and put pen to paper.
PC: If you had to choose the one song off of Taken that best encompasses who you are as an artist, which would it be and why?
Chrissy: That’s a hard one. I would say “Sometimes.” I feel like it shows my fun side and who I am deep down. I’m just a chilled person.
PC: With this being your debut album, did anything surprise you during this process? What was the biggest takeaway for you?
Chrissy: The biggest surprise is that I did fifteen whole songs during quarantine—it took a minute. I also did ten videos. That surprised me because I didn’t even know how I did it. We did like four music videos every other day.
I had a fun time putting it together. The biggest takeaway was that I love what I do.
Pop Culturalist Speed Round
PC: First album you bought?
Chrissy: I think I was eleven or twelve and it was a Justin Bieber album.
PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Chrissy: That’s a good one. I would say Adele’s 21 album. It was so deep, peaceful, and lyrically dope.
PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Chrissy: It’s not a venue, but I want to perform in Times Square in New York.
PC: A must-have on the road?
Chrissy: Lip gloss.
