10 Films to See at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival

Well, film lovers, it’s that time of year again. The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival kicks off this week (April 24) and runs until May 5. Obviously, there are a LOT of films to see and things to do so we’ve highlighted a few of the feature films we’re really excited to see (and although it’s not on our list below, we’re really stoked for the much-anticipated Zac Efron-led Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which is a part of the Festival, too).

American Woman
This is sure to be a fascinating (fictional) feature about the women who cared for Patty Hearst after she was abducted. Writer and director Semi Chellas (who wrote and produced for Mad Men and The Romanoffs) adapted this from the book, American Woman. Find more information about the film and screenings, click here.

Come to Daddy
When Norval (Elijah Wood) gets a letter from his estranged father to come visit him at his secluded, waterfront home, he goes since Norval has just come off a suicide attempt and alcohol struggles and has nothing else to do. But his dad is off and things turn nightmarish. This seems like it will be a wild ride, and Elijah Wood is great in quirky and strange roles/stories. Dreamland
A period piece and Margot Robbie? Sign us up! Finn Cole also stars in this Dustbowl Era Texas film about a young man trying to help his farming family make ends meet and a beautiful bank robber with a bounty on her head that he finds hiding in his family’s barn. Lucky Grandma
This is a dark comedy about an 80 year-old grandma (Tsai Chin), from New York’s Chinatown, who draws the attention of local gangsters during her day out at a casino; to protect herself she enlists the help of a bodyguard (Corey Ha)….from the rival gang. Plus One
Writer-director duo Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer have several great projects under their belts (writing for Pen15, directed for Adam Ruins Everything, etc.) so this rom-com should be a witty, fun ride where college friends Ben (Jack Quaid) and Alice (Maya Erskine) try to survive wedding season together. Safe Spaces
This film is about Josh (Justin Long), an adjunct professor, who has chaos happening in both his personal and professional lives. Fran Drescher and Richard Schiff play his parents; this is shaping up to be another solid New York City serious-comedy audiences will love. Skin
Based on the Academy-Award winning short film of the same name, Skin depicts the true story of Bryon Widner’s (Jamie Bell) decision to leave the local neo-Nazi sect he grew up in which is prompted when he meets a single mom (Danielle Macdonald) who is trying to raise her daughters out of that group as well. Wild Rose
A musically-filled movie about recently jail-free Rose-Lynn Harlan (Jessie Buckley) and her dreams of being a country music star. Sophie Okonedo plays the woman who decides to help her out. The Wrong Man
Written and directed by Ross Golan, multi-platinum songwriter, this animated film seems like it will be a fascinating piece featuring melodies, lyrics, and a universal story. Find more information about the film and screenings, click here.

Yesterday
A struggling singer-songwriter, Jack (Himesh Patel), who was a part of a freak bus accident during a weird global blackout, wakes up to learn that The Beatles never existed. So, he plays the songs himself and becomes a star. Not only does this premise sound great, but Danny Boyle is also the director. Find more information about the film and screenings, click here.
