To See or Not to See: Foursome

With so many streaming services at our fingertips, there’s no shortage of great original content. YouTube Red is the latest brand venturing into that world. And, one of their newest shows is a scripted comedy by AwesomenessTV called Foursome. The six-episode series follows four BFFs as they take on high school. From hook ups to breakups to make ups, the show brings plenty of laughs.

The cast is a melting pot of talent—which is one of the reasons it’s an appealing show to watch. It features digital superstars Jenn McAllister, Logan Paul, and Rickey Thompson, as well as up-and-coming actors Meghan Falcone, Cameron Moulène, Brooke Markham, and John Milhiser.

At its heart, Foursome is a show about friendship. We follow along with Andie (Jenn McAllister) as she tries to find a boyfriend—which she’s having a hard time doing. She’s young, attractive, smart…wait, something’s not adding up. Oh right, she has an overprotective brother, Alec (Logan Paul)! He scares away every boy in school. And, does ridiculous things like staple his little sister’s shirt. As Andie tells us, “She’s wearing a chastity belt that only her brother has the keys to.” Gross! Fortunately, Andie has her three best friends: Dakota (Rickey Thompson), Imogen (Brooke Markham), and Courtney (Meghan Falcone) to help remedy this situation. And, her eyes are set on Josh (Cameron Moulène), her brother’s good-looking best friend.

You’re probably saying to yourself, “I don’t need another teen comedy about high school.” And, I wholeheartedly agree. But, Foursome wants you to know that’s not what their show is about. Within seconds, you’ll be chuckling at the show’s warning: “This show about high school does not involve singing.” And, that’s not where it ends. Foursome also pokes fun at pop culture favorites like The Bachelorette.

The show creators know their audience. The raunchy comedy makes several references that Gen. Z viewers will understand—from sexting and Instagram stalking to slang like DSE. But, what makes Foursome great is its cast. They have fantastic chemistry. Each actor embodies their character. And, it’s hard not to like these colorful personalities—from the socially awkward Imogen to the over-the-top Dakota. After watching one episode, you’ll be invested in each of their stories—a testament to the actors and the writers. It’s a shame we’re only getting six episodes.

You can stream the first episode for free, here. But, if you’re like me, you’ll be signing up for a YouTube Red subscription.
