It feels slightly vicious for MTV to cancel freshman series Sweet/Vicious before it ever really found its audience. It’s no secret that we here at Pop Culturalist are big fans of the show and its cast. I even had the pleasure of chatting with Eliza Bennett who plays empathetic heroine Jules Thomas about what makes this series so special. So when word got out that executives at MTV had given this fearless series the axe, I was reasonably saddened and upset.
In a world full of reboots and remakes, it’s rare to find a series that feels fresh and completely unique. And that’s exactly what Sweet/Vicious was, among many other things. This compelling series not only tackled the subject of rape and sexual assault head on, it did so unapologetically. With witty writing, three dimensional characters that were tremendously relatable and a cool superhero vibe, Sweet/Vicious felt like something we’ve never seen before – certainly not on MTV.
Not to mention it’s incredibly gifted cast of relative unknowns shined brightly in their respective roles. Each actor and actress played their character with an understated perfection and it truly was a joy to watch them on my television screen week after week. This ensemble cast was brilliantly lead by Bennett and Taylor Dearden, who portrayed quirky and bold Ophelia Mayer, who had onscreen chemistry we haven’t seen since Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Buffy and Willow.
Even though the series’ freshman season only consisted of ten episodes, each episode was well-crafted, well-written and avoided those dreaded “filler” episodes. I, as does creator Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, believe there is a lot more story to tell. I refuse to throw out my green hair dye and give up on a series as wonderfully empowering as Sweet/Vicious. Here’s hoping MTV’s loss is another network’s gain!
