There has been a “song of the summer” for decades. We’re using this #TBT to take a look at some of our favorites. It was tough to narrow it down, but all of the songs we picked were released during the summer and made a big splash. In no particular order:
The Boy is Mine, Brandy & Monica
One of the greatest stand-offs in a song. Brandy and Monica bring smooth vocals and top-notch attitude to this song.
Blurred Lines, Robin Thicke, featuring T.I., Pharrell
Although this song had a very big response against it, it was undoubtedly a huge summer hit. It just may be a better experience listening to the music rather than watching the music video…
Umbrella, Rhianna featuring Jay-Z
The song that catapulted Rhianna to fame and spawned countless covers. It’s still super catchy.
Call Me Maybe, Carly Rae Jepsen
So this might be slightly annoying now, but that’s because it was played millions of times the summer it came out (thanks in part to Justin Beiber lip syncing this one with friends).
I Kissed a Girl, Katy Perry
Perry’s other big summer hit was “California Gurls”, but this one is iconic. Not only did this launch her career, but it also was a song that everyone talked about.
Genie in a Bottle, Christina Aguilera
I sense a theme…this song also launched Aguilera’s career. She had the pipes that certain other pop singers (ahem, Brittney) didn’t have.
Cheerleader, OMI
I dare you to not have this song stuck in your head for a full day after listening to it.
Hips Don’t Lie, Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean
Everyone wanted to shake their hips like Shakira. I mean, I still do.
Promiscuous, Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland
Nelly Furtado kind of made a bit of a comeback with this song. She hadn’t been super big after her initial single (“I’m Like a Bird”), but this song changed that.
Party Rock Anthem, LMFAO
What more do I need to say aside from the fact that this was THE party song of the summer when it was released?
Fancy, Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX
So fun to listen to and sing along to.
Crazy in Love, Beyonce featuring Jay-Z
Fantastic duet. This was a big moment for Jay and B. This song will be around for years to come because it is THAT good.
