San Diego Comic-Con is one of the most sought after tickets every year. And, with good reason. Networks bring fan favorite shows and give a sneak peek of what’s premiering soon. This year’s Preview Night included Powerless, Frequency, Time After Time, People of Earth, and Riverdale. I know what you’re thinking, “I can’t add any more shows to my queue!” But, lucky for you, we want to help. Here’s what you should keep an eye out for and what’s not worth watching:
Time After Time is a can’t-miss. It was hands-down the best preview at Comic-Con. And, we can’t wait to watch the story unfold further. The socially conscious show follows the adventures of H.G. Wells as he tracks down his longtime friend John Stevenson (a.k.a. Jack the Ripper). John escapes the law by using H.G.’s time machine. And, naturally, H.G. must travel to the present-day to stop him. There, H.G. Wells is expecting a Utopian society but he soon learns that’s not the case. Fortunately, he meets Jane Walker, who helps him along his journey. Drama, suspense, and a killer cast put Time After Time at the top of our list. And, spoiler alert, there’s a scene in the premiere that’s still giving us chills.
Frequency is a chilling story about a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited decades after his death. Based on the New Line film, Detective Raimy Sullivan lost her father at the age of seven and has always believed he was a disgrace to the force. But, everything changes when they’re reconnected via his vintage ham radio. As they rebuild their relationship, they’ll alter their timeline and face consequences for their actions. Frequency will have you at the edge of your seat all the while tugging at your heartstrings.
Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Josie and all your favorite characters from the Archie Comics are making their way to The CW. And, we can already sense the drama and tension. Following an eventful summer, the gang is set to start a new school year. And, a lot has changed. Riverdale is a bold interpretation that proves these iconic characters and storylines are as relevant today as they were decades ago.
Powerless is breaking ground as the first comedy series set in the DC Universe. And, yes, you can expect more superheroes! The show follows Emily, an insurance adjuster, who helps protect citizens against damages caused by heroes and villains. Powerless is entertaining but there was something missing. It didn’t leave us wanting more but, with a few more episodes, we’re hopeful it will.
People of Earth is a half-hour comedy that focuses on a support group for alien abductees. While it may sound funny, sadly it didn’t pack many laughs. And, that’s pretty surprising considering the involvement of Conan O’Brien, Greg Daniels, and David Jenkins. The series doesn’t bring anything new to the genre and felt much longer than thirty minutes.
