One of the newest faces to join The Flash this season is Violett Beane. Her character has quickly become one of the most talked about. And, we had the wonderful opportunity to chat with the talented actress about the role, her career, and sat her through our Pop Culturalist Speed Round.
PC: Were you familiar with the comics / television show before you auditioned?
Violett: I had seen a couple of the episodes and really liked it so I was excited and a little scared to go on tape for it! The acting in it, not to mention the special effects, were so beyond what I expected. I’m amazed at how far the TV industry has come!
PC: Were you nervous about playing such an iconic character? Comic book fans are very passionate—how have the fans reacted?
Violett: I was definitely a little nervous. I wanted to do her justice, but that’s another awesome thing about our show—they’re able to change up some storylines and relationships while still paying homage to the originals. The fans have been BEYOND amazing and supportive, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that because it just makes my job that much easier and more fun!
PC: Some of our favorite relationships on the show involve the characters and their parents. Jesse and Harrison have an emotional heart-to-heart in Episode 19. (Our team definitely shed a tear.) How has it been working with Tom and how did you guys build that chemistry?
Violett: It starts with the scenes they’ve written for us. They allow us to need each other’s safety but also a little breathing room. I thought that scene in episode 19 was so poetic… The fact that Harrison has been searching for Jesse for half of the season and the only one who can help bring him back from captivity is her. Tom has always been really welcoming from day one when I was feeling all the nerves. I think going into characters like these with open arms is essential to any relationship development!
PC: There have been quite a few hints that Jesse will turn into Jesse Quick. Is there anything that you can tease?
Violett: All I’ll say is I hope that happens, and I hope that suit is COOOOOL!
PC: What’s the atmosphere like on set? What was it like joining a show that already had a season under its belt?
Violett: It can definitely be difficult joining a set where a family has already been built, but I tried to stay open and positive and ended up meeting and getting to know some amazing people!
PC: Have you had any funny moments on set?
Violett: PHASE 10. If you wanna find out what your friends are really like… play Phase 10. It brings it all out!
PC: If you had to give your fellow cast members superlatives—what would they be?
Violett:
PC: We’re excited to see you in Slash! The film is making its way around the festival circuit. Can you tell us a bit about the film?
Violett: Slash is fun because it’s in the comic world. It’s about a high school boy who writes erotic fan fiction, and gets made fun of for it. Until he meets an older girl who also writes fan fic. They end up going to comic-con together and it follows the coming of age love story of theirs.
PC: How did you get started in acting?
Violett: I did theatre in middle and high school and always liked being creative and being on stage. I only really started focusing on television/film my senior year of high school.
PC: If you weren’t an actor, what would you be doing?
Violett: I’ve loved baking for a while now and definitely dreamed of opening up a shop. Anything from cakes to scones to pastries. I still think I’ll open up something down the line!
PC: Is there anyone you’re dying to work with?
Violett: Tatiana Maslany. I love love love Orphan Black. It amazes me the things she’s able to accomplish in that show. When I watch anything, I’m always analyzing it for something, never just watching for pleasure. And when I watch Orphan Black I literally forget it’s the same person playing so many different characters.
PC: Guilty pleasure movie & television show?
Violett: I don’t know if I should be guilty about these… but I love Cutthroat Kitchen and Fixer Upper with a passion! I think it’s because I find cooking and renovation to be some of the funnest things in the world.
PC: An artist or band that people would be surprised to find on your playlist?
Violett: Lots of Drake. Gotta love some Drizzy.
PC: Favorite play or musical?
Violett: Spring Awakening is an all time favorite. And I really loved a particular showing of Our Town I saw once at a local theatre company.
PC: Favorite book?
Violett: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
PC: DC or Marvel? Favorite Superhero?
Violett: DC except for I really like Spiderman. Favorite Superhero… JackJack from The Incredibles!
PC: Thank you so much for your time! What’s next for you? We heard you directed a music video?
Violett: I directed a music video for the band Eyelid Kid. Not only that but I edited it and am starring in it, I know, a lot! I play a deranged orphan girl who’s lived in a mansion with two dolls her whole life. You slowly find out, however, that she may just be a figment of Eyelid Kid’s imagination. I’m really excited for its premiere in two weeks!
