Patrick Gilmore is transcendent in any role he takes on, whether that be on film or television. He’s currently starring alongside Eric McCormack in Netflix’s newest series, Travelers. The role was created especially for him. That’s how good he is. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to chat with him about what’s in store for his character on Travelers and his upcoming projects.
PC: Can you tell us about Travelers and your character?
Patrick: Travelers is a cool take on a time travel show. It’s dark, intense, and keeps you guessing every episode. Perfect for binge-watching! I play David Mailer, who is a funny yet sheltered social worker who cares for a traveler: a young, intellectually disabled woman named Marcy Warton played by MacKenzie Porter.
PC: What attracted you to the project? And, how did you get involved?
Patrick: Brad Wright created the show. So, right away I was interested. I had the pleasure of working with Brad for a couple years and he wrote the role of David in Travelers for me. I was thrilled and honored when he told me that.
PC: The show follows a group of surviving humans who discover how to send their consciousness back in time. Their goal is to save humanity. What kind of obstacles can we expect them to face in the first season?
Patrick: This is the fun part of the show…not only are these Travelers saving the world, but they’re assuming the identities of real people and real people have real problems. Babysitters, homework, marriage…Travelers is more about characters than it is about the mission.
PC: Will there be any negative consequences for altering the timeline?
Patrick: Change is always scary!
PC: What was the most challenging part about the role?
Patrick: They wrote David lots of funny lines and it was tough not to go big with some of those gems—making people laugh is addictive.
PC: What similarities/differences do you share with your character?
Patrick: David is an optimist. He believes the best in people. I’m a tad jaded. But we look alike…so there’s that.
PC: If you could be any other character on the show, who would it be and why?
Patrick: I can’t imagine being anyone else on the show. Our cast is too good for me to imagine playing their role. David was written for me and he’s too fun to play.
PC: What was your favorite scene to shoot?
Patrick: Mackenzie Porter & I were lucky to be in the first scene shot for the show. It was just the two of us riding a bus, but the excitement of what we were making was palpable amongst cast & crew alike. That was a fun day.
PC: What do you hope fans take away?
Patrick: An insatiable addiction to the show
PC: Besides Travelers, where can fans see you next?
Patrick: You can spot me in the upcoming second season of You Me Her on the Audience Network. I reprise my fun role as Shaun, the hipster bartender who can’t keep his nose out of people’s biz.
