Music has the power to heal your soul. Just ask Parker Matthews. As a young boy, the up-and-coming pop artist struggled with depression and bullying. But through his craft, he was able to find solace during the toughest of times. Today, he’s inspiring and spreading his positive message through his music and song lyrics. Pop Culturalist spoke with Parker about his upcoming new single, how he overcame the darkness, and who inspired him to become a musician.
PC: When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Parker: I was five years old and watched Whitney Houston sing at the GRAMMYs and I knew right then that music was my calling.
PC: Who are some of your musical influences?
Parker: There are so many great artists out there but I’d say my favorites are my hometown girl, Christina Aguilera, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj, and Jennifer Hudson.
PC: What is your creative process like when working on a new tune?
Parker: I normally start with the idea of what the song is going to be about and then I write the chorus and hook. From there, I move on to the verse and save the bridge for last.
PC: Tell us about your single, “Hit and Run.” What was the inspiration behind the song?
Parker: “Hit and Run” is about having something more than a one night stand. In today’s culture, hooking up is usually as far as it goes, and then you never hear from that person again. I expect something more and when you’re with me, you’re going to be more than just a hit and run.
PC: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be and why?
Parker: It would be either Christina Aguilera because of her voice and what she stands for in music or Nicki Minaj because her tone is absolute fire.
PC: When can fans expect another single, EP or album?
Parker: My new single, “Feelin’ Right”, is coming out at the end of June! Stay tuned!
PC: Are there any plans to hit the road this year and do you have a venue that is on your bucket list to perform at?
Parker: I’m doing some shows towards the end of the year but if I could play Madison Square Garden that would be super awesome!
PC: Tell us about the work you’re doing with organizations for suicide prevention and anti-bullying.
Parker: I think being a part of organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign allows you to really reach people and help them be inspired to change and want to get the help they need. Being there in that moment of darkness is something I’ve been through and being able to use music to pull someone out of that place is one of the best ways to help. Music can move you and music can save you.
