Pop Culturalist Chats with Mags Duval

We’re going to let you in on a little secret. We’ve discovered the next breakout artist that you’re going to LOVE. Let us introduce you to Mags Duval. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter just dropped her newest single, “Plain Jane”. And we’re sure it’ll strike a chord with any listener. We chatted with this up-and-coming powerhouse about “Plain Jane” and her upcoming EP.

PC: Can you tell us about your new single, “Plain Jane”?
Mags: I wrote “Plain Jane” about a guy I was into and I thought he was into me too. Then I saw him out one night and he said, “Hey! This is my girlfriend…” A few of my friends tried to make me feel better by giving this surprise girlfriend the nickname “Plain Jane”. I wrote the song as a way of trying to boost my confidence after that whole situation [laughs].

PC: What is your creative process like when you’re working on a new song?
Mags: It’s different every time, honestly. Sometimes it starts with a song title or concept, sometimes I’ll just be driving at night and inspiration will hit me out of nowhere, and sometimes I’ll write poetry and pull ideas from my notebook.

PC: This year, you’ve released a few digital singles, what is it like having your music out in the world?
Mags: The. Best. Feeling. I’ve been writing songs since I was nine-years-old—I’ve always seen, heard, and felt the world through the lenses of songwriting. To be able to share my music now and connect with people through it is unreal.

PC: When can fans expect an EP or full-length album?
Mags: We’ll be releasing songs every 8-10 weeks and will eventually compile those into an EP, so definitely within the next few months!

PC: Do you have plans to tour this year?
Mags: I hope so! There is talk about touring once the EP is out.

PC: Who is an artist or band that you’d love to collaborate with? Dead or alive?
Mags: I would’ve loved to sing with Frank Sinatra, but living, I’d probably say Nick Jonas or Troye Sivan.

PC: When did you realize you wanted to pursue music?
Mags: I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to pursue music. It’s been such a huge part of my life from the very beginning, but I’d say when I went to a recording studio for the first time when I was 13—it was like opening a door to this whole world I’d always dreamed of, but never imagined I could actually be a part of. It was amazing!
