Pop Culturalist Chats with 7 Guardians of the Tomb’s Kellan Lutz

Kellan Lutz’s latest film, 7 Guardians of the Tomb, is a project that he’ll always hold close to his heart. It was an opportunity to work with director Kimble Rendall, another chance to live out a childhood dream, and the first time he met his now wife. Described as Indiana Jones meets arachnophobia, 7 Guardians of the Tomb is the first great adventure-thriller of 2018. Keep reading to hear what Kellan Lutz has to say about it.

PC: Tell us about 7 Guardians of the Tomb, your character, and what drew you to this project.
Kellan: Kimble Rendall drew me to this project. I met him on the set of his film, Bait, which is about 3D sharks, and I knew he must be a great director in order to make sharks in a supermarket work. When I met him, I thought he’d be a fun guy to work with. This was three years prior, and he told me, “Kellan, I have this spider movie,” and I was a little skeptical. I wasn’t really too excited, but once he sent me the script, I was really surprised. It was Indiana Jones meets arachnophobia, and he did such a great job with the story, plus I loved my character. He’s truly a great collaborating director. We were able to add some more layers to my character together. It was really great working with him and getting to shoot in Australia.

My character, Jack Ridley, is a search and rescue specialist. He joins a team that goes on a mission to save Jia’s brother, who’s lost. The whole movie revolves around them finding him and this elixir of life.

PC: Do you have a fear of spiders?
Kellan: I did have a small fear of spiders, but I don’t come across them too often. I do have a fear of cockroaches. I hate them. I pictured these spiders as cockroaches. You know what’s funny, Kimble used to hide spiders all over our set, including in our scripts, and when we used fake ones on set, I just imagined them as cockroaches.

PC: What types of adjustments do you have to make as an actor when you’re working on a project that involves a lot of CGI?
Kellan: You have to use your imagination more!

PC: It’s a brilliant international cast, how did you bond on and off set?
Kellan: We all bonded really, really well. That’s a result of Kelsey Grammer. He’s such a legend, and having him on set always available to us was a blessing. I always remember the stories that he shared with us and how we’d all sit around and laugh. He shared a lot of wisdom from years of acting. He never really went back to his trailer; he was always there for us.

PC: Is Jack a lot different than other characters you’ve played?
Kellan: No, not necessarily. I love playing these heroes and exploring their every day journeys and fights for justice. If I weren’t an actor, I’d probably be a firefighter or a cop; I just love playing heroes. That’s the great thing about acting, I get to live out these childhood dreams of mine.
