New Year, New Broadway

The 2016-17 Broadway season is in full swing and it’s safe to say the Tony Awards are going to be highly competitive this year. We’ve been spoiled with revivals of our favorites musicals (thank you Jujamcyn for Falsettos) and introduced to new musicals that make us bawl like babies (obviously talking about you, Dear Evan Hansen). Although 2016 was a magical year for theatre, we can’t wait to see what this year has in store for the Great White Way. Although we must say goodbye to favorites like long-running hit Jersey Boys and the Tony Award winning The Color Purple this year, we’re excited to say hello to these five new musicals:

Sunday in the Park with George

Opening night: February 23rd

Where: Hudson Theatre

If you didn’t get the chance to swoon over Jake Gyllenhaal when this show was at the New York City Center, don’t fret! The 1984 musical is transferring to Broadway in February and will run until April 23rd. Annaleigh Ashford, who starred alongside Gyllenhaal in the New York City Center production, will also be transferring to Broadway. It’s hard not to be excited about a Stephen Sondheim classic, am I right?

Amélie

Opening night: April 3rd

Where: Walter Kerr Theatre

If you couldn’t get tickets to Hamilton, now’s your chance to see the sensational Phillipa Soo in the stage adaptation of the 2001 romantic comedy Amélie. Soo is currently in Los Angeles, starring in Amélie’s pre-Broadway engagement. This musical is the epitome of a feel-good, quirky romance and we can’t wait to fall in love with Soo eight nights a week.

Groundhog Day

Opening night: April 17th

Where: August Wilson Theatre

Andy Karl is undoubtedly one of the most talented men on Broadway; he’s starred in hits like Jersey Boys (welcome back to the August Wilson), Legally Blonde, Rocky and 9 to 5. Although he’s no Bill Murray, we’re excited to see his portrayal of weatherman Phill Connors. It’s always fun to compare films with their stage adaptations so we have a feeling we’ll be back to see the show again, and again, and again, and again…

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Opening night: April 23rd

Where: Lunt-Fontanne Theatre

What do you get when you combine Tony winner Christian Borle with a beloved story by Ronald Dahl? A sure-fire hit. After a successful run in the West End, the musical is finally making its way to New York. Borle has portrayed a couple of notable icons such as William Shakespeare in Something Rotten! but we have a feeling Willy Wonka will be his sweetest role yet.

Bandstand

Opening night: April 26th

Where: Jacobs Theatre

After a praiseworthy premiere at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, the Andy Blankenbuehler directed Bandstand will say hello to Broadway this Spring. Set in the 1945s, this musical tells the tale of singer/songwriter Donny Novitski (Gigi‘s Corey Cott). The show also stars Broadway beauties Laura Osnes and Beth Leavel.
