The way we discover new music has drastically changed in the past decade. Music streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify make it easier than ever. And, that’s how I discovered Danish pop-soul band, Lukas Graham. They’re making their North American debut with their self-titled album—which went on sale today.
The band’s international hit “7 Years” is included on several Spotify playlists. And, has been streamed over 200 million times. With infectious hooks and crafty lyrics, it’s one you’ll have stuck in your head. In the song, frontman Lukas Graham Forchhammer reflects on the advice his parents gave him growing up as a child.
Forchhammer honed his talent and gritty songwriting in Christiania—an artistic community in Copenhagen. He’s performed at countless sold-out shows and festivals alongside his bandmates—Mark “Lovestick” Falgren (drums), Magnus “Magnum” Larsson (bass) and Kasper Daugaard (keyboard). They’re set to the tour the U.S. in April. Dates are on their official website.
Lukas Graham is pop meets hip-hop. Simply put: it’s brilliant. The album has melodies you want to hear again and again. And, the lyrics radiate with positivity. But, they also tug at your heartstrings. Lukas Graham’s vocals are ridiculously good.
“Mama Said” — Like many tracks on the album, Lukas reflects on his life. While he may not have had everything, he had enough. The catchy chorus, backed by a children’s choir, is reminiscent of Jay Z’s “Hard Knock Life.” It’s a track, you’ll definitely be singing along with.
“Better Than Yourself (Criminal Mind, Part 2)” — On my first listen, this song had me in tears. It’s an artist pouring his heart into his craft. You can hear the emotion in his voice and tone. And, it’s beautiful.
“You’re Not There” — This song is so relevant for Lukas and the band. It’s a heartfelt message to Lukas’ father about the fact that he will not be able to see his son strive.
If you haven’t picked up the album yet, what are you waiting for? It’s an absolute steal on iTunes.
