Ones to Watch: Aquilo

English duo Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher are Aquilo. This British duo’s newest song dropped at the end of January, but they have been around for a few years. They popped up in my Spotify Discover section, and I’m glad they did. Their music is a great combination of electronic pop and slightly melancholy vocals.

Here are some of Aquilo’s songs you should listen to right now from their various albums and EPs:

“Waiting” (especially this live version) has light instrumentals which allow the vocals to shine. This is definitely a song to put on if you’re slightly blue and can just sit and listen for a while.

“Best of Us Go Down” reminded me a bit of Bon Iver and James Blake with how Aquilo’s vocals are treated. This upbeat electronic pop song is on repeat on my player.

“Good Girl” is more bright pop that has a beat you want to dance to when compared to their other more melancholy songs. When this chorus comes back, you can’t help but move around.

Midnight, their live EP, was just released at the end of January is full of great live versions of their music. “Almost Over” is one of my favorites from that EP. Their voices blend so well together, creating beautiful harmonies that it’s definitely worth listening to.

Although Aquilo is currently only touring in the UK, keep your eyes peeled for any potential US tour dates. We will be!
