New Album: The Lumineers

The Lumineers return with their sophomore album, Cleopatra, and it doesn’t disappoint.

While their debut self-titled album was an across-the-board hit, singles like “Submarines” and “Stubborn Love” rose to the top of the charts. Arguably, The Lumineers’s most famous single was “Ho Hey”; it lasted in the Hot 100 charts for 62 weeks and was in numerous television shows and commercials.

Cleopatra may not have one particular hit song, but it does present 35 minutes worth of solid tracks to create a strong, cohesive album.

One of the most similar in upbeat jubilance and sound is “Ophelia”. The interesting explanation of the meaning behind “Ophelia” is worth reading about (Ophelia as a stand-in for fame and the fickleness of it).

Overall, the album is much quieter than their debut. The Lumineers do a wonderful job with the decrescendo: the beginning of the album is louder in a sense then slowly dies down. Indeed, the “Patience”, the final song on Cleopatra is solely instrumental, leaving the listener quietly and calmly.

If you are a current fan of The Lumineers, you should definitely get a copy of Cleopatra; and if you are not familiar with them, take a listen, and you’ll soon become a fan.
