Exclusive Video Premiere: Saticöy’s “Nice To Know”

Los Angeles-based alt-pop band Saticöy should be on everyone’s radar and is a group you need to know. The trio featuring Derek Long (vocals/guitar), Jaron Takach (drums/production), and Jonathan Averbook (bass) rose to prominence with their debut single, “Faded From Color”, which earned them critical acclaim. Their unique take on alternative pop music and shared desire to spread truth has resonated with listeners around the world.

Following the success of “Faded From Color”, the band dropped their newest song, “Nice To Know”, which was inspired by the passing of Derek’s father. It’s a powerful track that reminds us that even during the darkest of times, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. “I didn’t want to make a song about grief and the depression that follows, but rather the will to pick up and improve yourself in the memory of those passed,” Derek told Pop Culturalist.

Bandmate and producer Jaron adds, “I was trying to create a soundscape that evoked enough emotion to allow Derek the proper foundation to write about a deeply impactful moment in his life. The story definitely comes first on this one and it was our job as the band to support such compelling lyrics. To start, I decided to sample the first song I’d ever recorded in my parents’ basement. This is the first thing you hear in the song, and provides a very warm nostalgic feeling, even to the members of the band without a direct connection to the recording. From a lyrical writing perspective—we just had to be open and supportive when Derek presented us his ideas to allow his emotions and honesty to shine through. There were some collaborative efforts and criticisms here and there, but for the most part, with a song that’s so personal, it’s often best to let one person tackle the lyrics alone.”

Today, the band is excited to premiere the music video for “Nice To Know” exclusively on Pop Culturalist. Derek tells us, “For the video, we wanted to make sure that our director, Michael Arter, could tell a story where he could feel the maximum impact. We gave him a short description of what the intention of the song was without directly telling him who it was written for/about/by so that he could make his own connections. The story he decided to tell was one of a group of friends who had lost one of their own and decided to take a part of him along on a series of activities they once shared in their youth. One of the biggest things we stressed with this song is how important it was to nurture the nostalgia that the production and lyrical themes present. Including the home footage of Michael as a child just helps the listener connect with the characters and remind them of their own childhood/family/friends.”
