Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Raphael Alejandro of Bunk’d

Raphael Alejandro is one of Hollywood’s brightest young talents. At only twelve, he’s accomplished more than many do in a lifetime. He’s starred in projects including Once Upon a Time, Kindergarten Cop 2, and Almost Human. But he’s best known for his role as the cautious and lovable camper facing his fears in Disney Channel’s Bunk’d, and we chatted with him about the series.

Career

PC: How did you discover your passion for acting?
Raphael: I discovered my passion for acting by following the footsteps of my older sister, Dalila Bela, and my older brother, Bruce Salomon, both actors as well. I saw them having so much fun on set that I wanted to do the same, and I was not disappointed. Shooting TV shows and movies is a lot of fun, and you meet tons of great and interesting people.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Raphael: I think that my sister had the biggest influence on my career. Seeing her hard work and dedication makes me want to become a better actor.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your young career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Raphael: One of my most memorable moments was playing Salma Hayek’s son in the movie How to Be a Latin Lover. I’m very grateful that I got to work, head to head, with this Hollywood icon and amazing person.

Bunk’d

PC: You’re best known for your role as Matteo in Bunk’d. How has your character grown throughout the years?
Raphael: Matteo started as a kid who was mostly afraid of everything, even his own shadow, and he didn’t like to try new things. But now, Matteo has become more adventurous, and he is more willing to explore new horizons.

PC: Has anything surprised you about his journey?
Raphael: I think that by being more accepting of his weaknesses and trying to overcome them to become less afraid and more adventurous surprised me about Matteo’s journey in the show.

PC: You’re also starring in Jungle Cruise. Tell us about the film, your character, and what drew you to this project.
Raphael: Jungle Cruise was so much fun to film. The movie is based off a Disneyland ride, and it’s full of adventure. What drew me to this project was the opportunity that I had to work with the Rock. I had such a great experience and all the time that I spent filming with the Rock was awesome. He made me feel completely at home, and we had a lot of interesting conversations on our breaks.
