Mongolian hip-hop sensation Mrs. M has a “tasty” new single out that will leave listeners hungry for more. Lucky for us, we won’t have to wait too long. The rapper is hard at work putting together her debut EP, which is expected to drop in the near future. Pop Culturalist had the pleasure of speaking with Mrs. M in between studio sessions to learn more about all the music heading our way.
PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Mrs. M: Ever since I was a little girl, I made up my own songs and sang them to myself.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Mrs. M: Definitely my parents! My mother is an actress and my father has always supported my music.
PC: Tell us about your new single, “Tasty”. What inspired the song?
Mrs. M: The beat was made by Silverstrike in Hong Kong. When I first heard it, the words just came to me. Since it’s my first song in English, I kept it pretty simple, and maybe it’s a little old school.
PC: It’s your first English track. What was the most surprising part about the experience? Was the creative process different?
Mrs. M: It was my first time singing and rapping in English. It’s also my first time recording outside of Mongolia; we recorded in Hong Kong. Then, I had NASTEE mix it in New York, and then we shot the video on top of the tallest building in Mongolia. There were so many firsts! Rhyming in English is hard, but fun, and the phrasing takes time, but I’ll get better and better.
PC: What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned being a part of this industry?
Mrs M: Just be yourself always, no matter where you are or who you’re talking to.
PC: What does the rest of the year hold for you as we look ahead in 2019?
Mrs. M: I’m working on my first EP now. It will be mostly in English, but with a couple of my Mongolian tracks, too. We’re going to shoot a few new videos for that. Then I’ll go to NYC for a showcase in September. I’m very excited about that!
PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Mrs. M: My playlist is so varied! On heavy rotation at the moment is Erykah Badu (always), Doja Cat, and Peggy Gou. I guess if there’s a guy on there that would be surprising. [laughs] No, I listen to tons of male rappers!
PC: First album you bought?
Mrs. M: I bought my own album, Gentleman. [laughs]
PC: First concert you attended?
Mrs. M: When I was nine or ten, I saw my mother perform in a musical show. I knew then that I wanted to be on stage and make people proud of me.
PC: Someone you’d love to collaborate with?
Mrs. M: Well, I’m really looking forward to collaborating with some U.S. producers and artists. I would love to work with Harry Fraud, Curren$y, or French Montana.
PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Mrs. M: There isn’t a particular album really, but discovering Erykah Badu changed my life. She can do it all, and I want to do it all.
PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Mrs. M: I will play at Chelsea Music Hall in New York this fall, so that’s really my dream for now.
PC: A must-have on the road?
Mrs. M: My phone [laughs]
