Campbell Greenock is an award-winning actor from Down Under who’s making his presence known on an international stage. After studying acting in Perth at WAAPA, Campbell worked in some film projects before being cast as the titular character in the feature film Whiteley. Since then, he’s gone on to guest star in the comedic series Metro Sexual, which will premiere later this year in the US. Pop Culturalist caught up with rising star Campbell Greenock to chat about his career and role in Metro Sexual.
PC: You’re an actor and producer. How did you discover your passion for the arts? Is there one that you naturally gravitate towards?
Campbell: I performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Puck when I was thirteen and fell in love with performing!
PC: At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in the arts? Was it a difficult decision?
Campbell: At fifteen, I appeared in my first major production with the WA Youth Theatre Company. I was spending more and more of my time acting, and it evolved in my mind into what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. In some families, the arts are seen as a hobby. In mine, they have always been seen as a viable career. This ensured it wasn’t a difficult decision. That and I was one of those kids that just wouldn’t shut up, so my mum put me in theater classes, and I haven’t looked back since.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Campbell: The WA Youth Theatre Company.
PC: As you look ahead in your career, what are some of your hopes and aspirations?
Campbell: Now that I am established, my next goal is to produce my own content.
PC: Tell us about Metro Sexual, your character, and what drew you to this project.
Campbell: Metro Sexual is the first Australian series picked up by a large network with two LGBT leads, as well as being produced by them. In a time when so much content is being produced, it’s always a pleasure to be telling stories as told by the people who have lived them. My character Toby is a patient at a sexual health clinic who finds himself being constantly neglected as Dr. Marsh keeps sneaking off to spy on the other doctor. There’s a great moment where Toby gets caught with his pants down—literally!
PC: How similar or different are you to your character? How did you prepare to step into his shoes?
Campbell: Toby was a very naturalistic character, and I was really given the freedom to approach him however I wanted. I didn’t spend too much time overthinking though, as comedy needs to live in the moment!
PC: Guilty pleasure TV show?
Campbell: Love Island
PC: Guilty pleasure movie?
Campbell: Cat in the Hat
PC: Favorite book?
Campbell: All Quiet on the Western Front
PC: Favorite play or musical?
Campbell: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Campbell: Michael Kiwanuka
PC: Who would play you in the story of your life?
Campbell: Olivia Colman
PC: Hidden talent?
Campbell: Embroidery
