Brendan Taylor has been a staple in the entertainment industry for over two decades. He’s graced the screen in projects like The Magicians, iZombie, Supernatural, and The Arrangement. He’s also worked behind the scenes in a number of different projects, proving he’s a jack-of-all-trades. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to catch up with Brendan to chat about his starring role in Netflix’s breakout new hit, Firefly Lane, which was recently picked up for a second season!
PC: How did you discover your passion for the arts?
Brendan: I was a pretty shy kid growing up. Like a lot of shy kids, I found comfort in using acting as an outlet. But I didn’t think I could make a career out of it. My mom worked in the art department, so something behind the scenes seemed more realistic. I went to college and graduated with an unrelated degree.
I found an acting class after college. That reignited my passion for acting. But I needed to pay my bills, so I took a job in set decoration through my mom. I made a lot of contacts through that and worked in the field for years.
I kept taking classes throughout that time until I was able to support myself without a side gig. That led me to some success, and I haven’t looked back.
PC: In addition to being an actor, you’ve done a lot of work behind the scenes. How have those experiences made you a stronger creative?
Brendan: I always tell any aspiring actor to spend time on set in another capacity besides acting. I spent hours working behind the scenes before I stepped in front of the camera. I spent hours learning what everyone’s job was and how they contributed to the project. That made the whole experience less intimidating. It gives you this confidence and a sense of belonging. It helps you ask the right questions so you can do your job the best you can.
PC: Tell us about Firefly Lane and your character in the series.
Brendan: Firefly Lane is a drama that follows a lifelong friendship over three decades. Tully and Kate meet as young girls, and they couldn’t be any more different. But they form a bond that lasts decades. It’s tested by tragedy, motherhood, and a love triangle.
I play Mutt. He’s a lovable cameraman who works at KPOC in the ’80s timeline with Kate, Tully, and Johnny. He’s very loyal, has a big heart, and has eyes for Kate from the moment they meet.
PC: What drew you to this project?
Brendan: When I got the script, I laughed my ass off. That’s always a good sign. I love comedy. I love playing quirky characters with heart. This show is more on the dramatic side, so I was happy to bring some levity.
PC: Besides Firefly Lane, you have a couple of other projects in the work. Are there anything you can chat about at this time?
Brendan: Absolutely! I have two romantic TV features coming out later this year. I have a supporting role in each of them. They were a lot of fun to make. I got to put my own spin on each. I’m excited for everyone to see them!
