Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Alex Shera

From setting trends in the world of fashion to making hits on the music scene, Alex Shera is a powerhouse creative who can do it all. Since dropping his debut single in 2019, Alex has had fans yearning for more, and he recently dropped his first release of 2021. Pop Culturalist had the pleasure of speaking with Alex about his new song “Wish I Never”.

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Alex: Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a passion for music. Since the age of seven, I have been a huge fan of The Sound of Music. I have always enjoyed watching that film so much. I also participated in theater and plays. As I got older, I finally got the courage to start recording and releasing my own music, and I’m so excited to share it with the world.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Alex: I don’t know if I can fully say who or what fully inspired my music career because I’m a fan of so many people. Growing up, I would study and watch the Jacksons dance and sing in such incredible form and style. Lana Del Rey has also inspired me to really dig deep into the visual creative side of my artistry as well.

PC: What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from the world of fashion that you’ve been able to apply to your career as a music artist?
Alex: As a fashion stylist that has worked with such incredible and powerful acts, I’ve seen the music industry from a different perspective. I’ve gotten to observe the industry and understand key elements that will help my career now as an artist. It all comes down to hard work. Late studio nights, early morning meetings, and rigorous work is what I’ve learned.

PC: Tell us about “Wish I Never” and the inspiration behind the song.
Alex: “Wish I Never” is about someone who I had such strong feelings for that I honestly wish I had never met them at all.

PC: Your first two singles have been incredibly well received. What has that response meant to you? Does that add any pressure for future releases?
Alex: Thanks! Yes, I’m so blessed and excited for the new listeners and fans that I’m connecting with. I’m even more excited to keep dropping new music and showing my potential to the world. I’m coming at y’all with some new dark, slick energy.

PC: If you had to pick one single lyric of yours that best encompasses who you are as an artist, which would it be and why?
Alex: In “Wish I Never,” the first verse: “Been looking down every bottle / know that I should fake a smile.” ‘Nuff said.

PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2021, what does the year hold for you?
Alex: In 2021, I’m going to be working on a ton of new music, collaborating with dope artists, and continuing to stay true to myself in my music and life.

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?

PC: First album you bought?
Alex: My parents bought me a Britney Spears album in 1999. I’m pretty sure it was …Baby One More Time.

PC: First concert you attended?
Alex: Britney Spears’ Onyx Hotel Tour in San Diego.

PC: An album that changed your life?
Alex: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours or Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
