Future EGOT Page Kennedy is back reprising his role in The Meg 2: The Trench. The larger-than-life thrill ride supersizes the 2018 blockbuster and takes the action to higher heights and even greater depths with multiple massive Megs and so much more. Page’s jaw-dropping performance as DJ is something to marvel at. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Page about The Meg 2: The Trench, his new album A Book of Pages, and more!
Please Note: This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. We stand in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, and will not be conducting further interviews until a fair deal is reached.
PC: The Meg 2: The Trench is hitting theaters on August 4th. What can you tell us about the upcoming film and where we find DJ?
Page: This movie is going to be a ride—a ride like no other. There are so many antagonists that are coming for us, it’s exciting. DJ has come back to run with the gang again, only this time he is prepared.
PC: The first film was incredibly well received. What do you think is resonating most with audiences this time around?
Page: I honestly feel like audiences of all ages and creeds have a fascination with water monsters. We know so little about them. And this is the scariest water monster we’ve ever seen. So, I think it just works for everyone.
PC: We’re going to see DJ get into the action more this year. How did that change your preparation?
Page: Well, I lost weight to start with. Then, I trained in fighting. You never really see bigger guys do kicks in fights. I thought that would be too difficult, but the stuntmen believed in me and taught me how to do a roundhouse [laughs]. I was so proud of myself that I chose the most difficult fight combo.
PC: In addition to the incredible work that you’ve done on the screen, you’re also a rapper and lyricist. How have those different mediums lent themselves to one another?
Page: I think I use both talents for each other. I just wrote a song right now. In writing it, I thought it was good. It wasn’t until I got in the studio and used my acting ability to make you feel compassion for me through my performance, that it truly took on its light. So, I did something most rappers can’t do. Being proficient in both helps me in each field.
PC: You’re also getting ready to drop A Book of Pages. What do you hope to say with this body of work?
Page: I hope the audience (Pagers) can really hear my diversity—the fact that I offer so many different elements. I tell personal stories. I have songs that are just a vibe and easy listening. I have socially conscious songs, introspective songs, and sometimes just straight bars.
PC: If you had to pick a song off of A Book of Pages that best encompasses who you are as an artist, which would it be and why?
Page: If I had to pick just one song, which is incredibly daunting to do, I think I would pick the second track on the album. It has bars, but it’s socially responsible and age-appropriate. At this juncture of my life, the things that are important to me are different than when I was in my 20s and 30s. The world is different as is how I see it, so it’s important to me that I share my perspective of the world in a clever and witty way. I think I do that with God’s grace. The album is also available now for purchase on BandCamp for those who can’t really wait.
PC: You’ve done it all in your career. What’s left on your bucket list?
Page: I want to win an EGOT. I have the talent. I need the opportunity. I want to be the greatest actor/rapper ever.
