Rising star Liza Jane is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter whose sultry and soulful vocals have struck a chord with listeners around the world. Her music is the perfect blend of vulnerability and power, reminding listeners that even in the darkest of times, we can prevail. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Liza about the release of her debut EP, Unbreakable.
PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Liza: Since I was two years old, I’ve told my parents that I came here to sing. I’ve always wanted to be a performer. I would run around the house with a blue wig on, dancing and singing to Céline Dion, Cher, and more. I would sing “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty and my favorite musicals. Honestly, I’d say that I was born with this passion.
PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Liza: So many artists continue to influence me and motivate me to be better, from the musicals and songs I grew up singing to current inspirations like Lady Gaga and the Weeknd. To me, Lady Gaga defied the odds, becoming a legendary success by believing in herself and dismissing the haters. She’s courageous, confident, and kind. But most importantly, I would say my parents have had the biggest influence on me through their unwavering support. They have always encouraged me to follow this dream, no matter how many challenges have arisen.
PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your young career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Liza: Performing with renowned Broadway star of The Phantom of the Opera, Brent Barrett (he played Raul). We performed the duet “All I Ask of You” from The Phantom of the Opera when I was fifteen years old, and I will always remember that experience. It is my favorite musical and song, and he was amazing to perform with. I think that video is still up on my YouTube channel.
PC: Tell us about your debut EP Unbreakable. What was the inspiration behind it?
Liza: The biggest inspiration behind my EP Unbreakable was the idea that no matter what we go through in life we can come out stronger, through thick and thin. Life throws a lot of obstacles our way, but we are survivors, warriors, and fighters, like the lyrics of the song “Unbreakable” say. I dedicate that song to my mother who is a breast cancer survivor—the greatest of warriors. I want this EP to be an anthem to empower others, especially women.
PC: This is your debut EP. Did anything surprise you about this experience? What was the biggest takeaway?
Liza: The support of my friends, family, and everyone involved in the making of it. It all went so smoothly and we worked so well together. The experience truly took my breath away. I am happy with how it came out and even happier that the masses can finally hear these songs. If you work hard, surround yourself with the right people, and really put your mind to it, everything will fall into place; that’s my biggest takeaway.
PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2022, what can fans expect from you?
Liza: Fans can expect me to perform live more and to hear new music! There are more lyric videos coming out soon from this EP, and I’ll be heading back into the studio soon. Be sure to follow along on my socials to be the first to see some new work, behind-the-scenes footage, you name it.
PC: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist?
Liza: Lil Nas X is one of my favorite artists right now, and he is on a lot of my playlists.
PC: First album you bought?
Liza: I can’t remember which one, but my mom bought me a Cher CD when I was little because she was my favorite!
PC: First concert you attended?
Liza: The Jonas Brothers!
PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Liza: The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack because I’ve always had a classical operatic voice, and I’ve loved every one of those songs.
PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Liza: Hollywood Bowl.
PC: A must-have on the road?
Liza: My tarot card deck.
