Exclusive Interview: Arian S. Cartaya on His Breakout Role in ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ and the Thrill of Facing Pennywise

When it comes to breakout performances, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. In 2025, Arian S. Cartaya has cemented himself as one of the year’s brightest rising stars, stepping into the chilling world of IT: Welcome to Derry—the highly anticipated prequel series expanding the iconic Stephen King universe. As fans return to the cursed town that started it all, Arian’s portrayal of Rich has quickly become one of the most talked-about performances of the season, blending warmth, wit, and humanity amid the horror.

In IT: Welcome to Derry, viewers are transported back to the origins of the nightmare, uncovering the town’s terrifying past and the evil that has haunted it for generations. But at the heart of the series lies an ensemble of young characters whose courage and connection bring light to the darkness—and Arian’s performance stands out as a defining thread, grounding the terror in authenticity and heart.

Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to chat with Arian S. Cartaya about joining the IT universe, his experience facing Pennywise on set, and how this role—his first leading one—has changed everything.

PC: This is such an iconic franchise to be a part of—what was your reaction when you found out you’d landed the role?
Arian: Wow, when I found out I’d been chosen to play Rich in this iconic franchise, I couldn’t believe it! I remember my team calling my parents and asking to put them on speaker so they could share the news—and we all started jumping with excitement. I still can’t believe I get to be part of the IT universe!

PC: How did you prepare to step into this role, and what was it like experiencing the horror from behind the camera compared to watching it as a fan?
Arian: I didn’t have to prepare much because I feel like Rich’s personality is very similar to mine. But I did watch a few episodes of ¿Qué Pasa, USA?, a Spanglish show my parents used to watch when they were teenagers—that was one of my biggest inspirations.

Behind the scenes, the entire crew made us feel comfortable and safe at all times. They gave us all the tools we needed to focus on our performances, along with the guidance of our acting coach, Mr. Ben (Ben Perkins). Now, watching it as a fan feels completely different—I have to admit, it’s terrifying!

PC: There’s such great chemistry between the entire ensemble. How did you all build that bond?
Arian: From the very first time we met, we connected right away. But it was living together in the same building for so long that really created that incredible bond between us. We had countless sleepovers, were always coming up with fun things to do, and spent our free time exploring Toronto together. It was so much fun—now we’re like a family.

PC: You’ve mentioned that Rich mirrors a lot of who you are. How did that familiarity and comfortability shape your approach to the character and allow you to bring even more authenticity to your performance?
Arian: Rich is definitely a reflection of who I am. I loved playing him—it was so much fun, and honestly, I didn’t have to work too hard at it! There were just a few scenes where I really had to look deep inside myself, but with everyone’s help, I was able to pull them off. Rich is Cuban, and I’m Cuban-American. He’s affectionate, friendly, funny, witty, and loves hugging everyone—and that’s exactly how I am, too!

PC: It’s already been revealed that Bill Skarsgård is reprising his role as Pennywise. What was it like collaborating with him, and how did his performance help bring out the best in yours?
Arian: Yes, Bill is our Pennywise! Working with him was incredible—but also terrifying. Just seeing him in full costume gives you chills. The production team did an amazing job keeping him hidden from us until the very last moment when it was time to film, and let me tell you—the screams and emotions you see on screen are exactly what we were all feeling in real life.

PC: This is your first leading role. What did you take away from the experience, and what was the biggest surprise along the way?
Arian: Yes, this is my first leading role, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I’m so grateful to casting director Rich Delia, to Andy, Barbara, and the entire production team for welcoming me into the IT family. I’ll always carry with me the incredible experience of building such strong bonds and meeting so many wonderful people along the way.

And the biggest surprise? Getting to work with Pennywise and meeting Bill!

PC: The series is already receiving rave reviews. Is there a particular scene or episode you’re most excited for audiences to see, and why?
Arian: Yes, the show is killing it right now, and we’re all so happy! I have so many favorite scenes and episodes, but honestly, the entire series is intense from start to finish. I can’t wait for the world to see what’s next!
