Alexis Molnar is an award-winning storyteller celebrated for her ability to seamlessly embody characters and craft timely narratives. From her standout performance as Alana Beck in Dear Evan Hansen to her compelling portrayal of Lottie Adams in Harbor, Alexis has consistently captivated audiences with her nuanced and layered performances. Currently, she stars in the highly anticipated new series, Eric. Pop Culturalist had the privilege of speaking with Alexis about the project, her character development process, and her upcoming short film.

PC: You have a new project coming out soon. Tell us about Eric, your character, and what it was about this script that resonated with you.
Alexis: Eric is a new drama thriller series by Abi Morgan, directed by Lucy Forbes. The series revolves around a father’s struggle with narcissism and grief following his son’s disappearance on the way to school, all viewed through the unique perspective of a seven-foot tall blue monster named Eric.

I play a character named Raya, who is streetwise and addicted to crack cocaine, willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants.

Abi’s writing immediately captivated me, and I was eager to see as much of the series as possible while auditioning. The world of Eric and its characters are compelling and real, which drew me in.

PC: Part of your creative process involves reading the script meticulously and learning more about your character through what others say about them. What did you learn about Raya through the eyes of others?
Alexis: Raya might not be everyone’s favorite, but she is also a victim of her circumstances. While that doesn’t excuse how she treats others, she knows what she needs to do to survive.

PC: In addition to your work on screen and stage, you’re also a writer and producer. How have your experiences behind the camera influenced the way you approach your work as an actor and vice versa?
Alexis: Just like with any profession, I think the more knowledge and education you can gain—whether from a course, mentor, or by asking someone you don’t know a question—makes you more effective in your field. This is what I strive for. Having perspective is vital because it makes you a better communicator and a better person to work with. It teaches you hard decision-making and responsibility, and you’re still making bold choices whether you’re working on or off camera.

PC: There is such a star-studded cast attached to this project. What did you learn about your own craft while working alongside them?
Alexis: I definitely learned to trust my own craft more. Sometimes, imposter syndrome can creep in when you see your name among so many respected artists, but it also means that your name deserves to be there too. Everyone is there to do the best job they can, and this particular cast was incredibly supportive and trusting.

PC: You’re also working on a short film. Can you tell us anything about Boyhoarder?
Alexis: Boyhoarder is a short punk horror film that I co-produced and starred in, alongside Liza Anne, who wrote the original music with their writing partner Kyle Ryan. It’s directed by Gabi Carrubba. The film is about an eponymous band, Boyhoarder, whose misandrist lyrics are taken a little too literally by an adoring fan. It’s a bloody and fun play on idolatry and sociopathy, inspired by Valerie Solanas, the films of John Waters, and cult horror movies. Our team is currently pitching the film to production and streaming companies with the goal of producing it as a feature. Fingers crossed!
