Unearthed took readers on a wild ride through the galaxy to an alien planet immersed in secrets and puzzles. At every turn, Mia and Jules faced danger and obstacles as they raced to solve the mystery of the alien species called the Undying. But the answers they hoped would be salvation for Earth turned into an ugly truth no one was prepared for. Mia and Jules’ story comes to a thrilling conclusion in Undying, the final book in the duology. Be sure to read my review of Unearthed right here.
Undying picks up with Mia and Jules trying to escape the alien spaceship they are trapped on, desperate to warn Earth of the coming invasion. They are able to make a hasty getaway and return home to share the horrifying plans of the Undying. Only, no one believes them. Mia and Jules are forced to go on the run from the authoritative International Alliance and stop the threat of the Undying themselves. With nothing but their wits, courage, and a few unexpected allies, Mia and Jules are determined to save their home from the hands of their enemy.
Kaufman and Spooner infuse the breakneck pace of action, drama, and suspense from the first book into the sequel. It’s a non-stop race across Europe for Mia and Jules as they simultaneously evade the clutches of the International Alliance and search for a way to stop the Undying from carrying out their deadly plans. With such an intense plot, you won’t want to put this book down till you reach the end!
Along the way we meet some new characters, like Jules’ cousin Neal, who is instantly likable with his sense of humor and charming personality. Dex and Atlanta, a pair of Undying soldiers, give us a glimpse into the fascinating life of the Undying. Some of the things that you learn about them may surprise you. There are also a couple of characters that toe the line between ally and adversary. It’s a guessing game till the end for which side they end up on. Once again, the story is narrated in the alternating voices of Mia and Jules. We begin to see the toll it takes on each when the fate of the world rests on their shoulders.
The first book has a strong Indiana Jones vibe, but the sequel moves away from this trope. Instead it is driven by its high-stakes mission to save humanity from an alien invasion. This creates a sense of urgency and suspense throughout the novel. Kaufman and Spooner even have a few more spectacular twists left to reveal. One of which left me in stunned disbelief. Nonetheless, Mia and Jules’ long, arduous journey comes to a satisfying end.
Final thoughts: Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner deliver a stellar, A+ finale with Undying.
